An independent investigation into the suicide of 10-year-old Isabella "Izzy" Tichenor last November found "no direct evidence to support the allegations that Izzy was bullied on the basis of race and/or disability," according to a Davis School District report released Friday. The district announced its investigation in December 2021 following the Tichenor family's claim that Izzy, who was Black and the family has said had autism, died by suicide after facing discrimination and bullying at Foxboro Elementary in North Salt Lake and that school officials "knew of the bullying and failed to respond." A summary of the investigative team's findings said that:

Fors the past several years, I have heard black people say blacks don’t commit suicide and don’t hang themselves.

I don’t know much about this specific incident. But I taught in urban public schools for decades. Bullying was rampant there (same as it always was). The target kids suffered every day. Teachers were infuriated. It was heartbreaking. And the district did nothing. And that’s because any admission that bullying occurred is bad publicity. Can’t have that.

Some folks say the target kids should just fight back. Punch that big bully in the nose! Well, that kind of thinking is 30 years out of date. Any bullied kid who fought back would (not might, but would) be jumped in a stairwell or on the way home.

Some of those bullied kids would ask me for advice. My response was always the same. Its best to get out of here. Go to a charter school.

I NEVER saw rampant bullying when I went to school.

IF a student got out of line, the football & wrestling team would take care of the problem out behind the bleachers.

NEVER had it in one room grade school.

What a conundrum; to believe claims of a black family or trust in the “investigation” conducted by public school district. Think I’ll go with the family on this one. Public school districts seem to enjoy the credibility of Congress or the MSM these days.

“...Izzy was bullied on the basis of race and/or disability,”

Having had some experience as a teacher and dealing with someone who had autism, I can see how she might well have been the victim teasing and bullying. Not because she was black, but because she was odd. Kids usually don’t deal well with odd children. It really depends on the kids I suppose.

I subbed several years with a class that had an autistic boy. He looked and acted like a frightened little bird. But he was lucky; there were three girls of good character that more or less protected him over the years. They influenced their classmates. He graduated from 8th grade last year. Hope his high school classmates are as good to him.

In middle school our son was bullied. He was small for his age, blond, and a musician. He also had the juvenile lead in a local play. But he also, at the time, had a blue belt in martial arts. So finally, after being followed around all day by a boy twice his size, kicking his feet and calling him names, he hauled off and socked him. The bully hit the ground and started crying. Later the vice principle called Mr. MERCAT and told him that he had to give our son a one day suspension but called it “time served.” Mr. M said that was not acceptable and the vp tore it up. I was proud of both our son and Mr. M.

I didn’t want to comment on the KSL boards, I’m already on their watch list. So here goes:
The mother was the one proclaiming racism, not the little girl.
I don’t know any 10 year olds for reference, so does a 10 year old know what suicide is? Do they know how to kill themselves? She was a somewhat mentally disabled girl, if I recall.
So the mother said “suicide” but to my knowledge no autopsy was performed.
What’s more common - a 10 year old killing themselves or a enraged parent harming or killing their child?
Maybe time to investigate the mother.

As a follow-up, the white community in Davis County, and Utah, had every charge of racism thrown at them by this event. Social media couldn’t get enough of it, and a few NBA Jazz players piled on with the social justice b.s.
To date, no apologies have been seen...
