Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg suspended Trump investigation 'indefinitely,' stopped pursuing charges

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg stopped pursuing charges against former President Trump and suspended the investigation "indefinitely," one of the top prosecutors who resigned from the office said in his resignation letter--but disagreed with the decision.

Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne, who had been leading the investigation under former DA Cyrus Vance, submitted their resignations last month, after Bragg began raising doubts about pursuing a case against Trump.

"You have reached the decision not to go forward with the grand jury presentation and not to seek criminal charges at the present time," Pomerantz wrote in his resignation letter, first reported by the New York Times. "The investigation has been suspended indefinitely."

"Of course, that is your decision to make," Pomerantz wrote to Bragg. "I do not question your authority to make it, and I accept that you have made it sincerely."

However, Pomerantz said that "a decision made in good faith may nevertheless be wrong."

"I believe that your decision not to prosecute Donald Trump now, and on the existing record, is misguided and completely contrary to the public interest," Pomerantz wrote. "I therefore cannot continue in my current position."

Pomerantz wrote that he believed Trump was "guilty of numerous felony violations" and said it would be a "grave failure of justice not to prosecute him."

Pomerantz and Dunne had previously agreed to stay on in the district attorney’s office after Vance’s term expired in January and Bragg took the helm.

At the time, Bragg said he was getting up to speed on the Trump investigation and vowed to "follow the facts."

"It’s a matter that’s personally, as you would imagine, on my radar screen and that I’m mindful of and paying attention to," Bragg said.

Sort of - the press still got many months of constant “Trump is under investigation” headlines out of it for the general public to absorb into their memory banks.

It’s simple. It is extremely dangerous for Democrats to keep bringing up Trump in the minds of ordinary Americans.

They will undoubtedly remember the optimism, prosperity, respect, and prices of the mean old Trump years. Not a good strategy for Democrats.

Two cakes impeachments and this NY “investigation”—— and never a single shred of criminal activity. It’s all been gross misuse of legal process imho.

The old saying about messing with the bull and getting the horns comes to mind here.

In that case, I hope the Democrats keep President Trump’s name in the news!

They put the screws on Michael Cohen early on. He likely told the everything he knows. Even with that insider information, they couldn't find anything incriminating on Trump.

If there was anything to find on Trump they would have found it years ago.

Optimistic take: he knew the “crimes” that were being pursued were either never successfully prosecuted against someone who had enough money for a lawyer or taking up too many resources for a political vendetta while the rest of the city is burning and the new mayor tries to reverse the direction that DeBlasio put the city into.

Cynical take: the investigations will be restarted in the late spring of 2024 with leaks and innuendo to really pick up steam after the presidential primaries.

They have never been able to pin anything real on him yet, and it’s not for a lack of trying.

He’s not perfect, but he’s squeaky clean legally and they know it because if there was something he legitimately did wrong or illegal, they would have used it years ago.

The worst they could ever pin on him was some vulgar guy talk, and that died on the vine. They have had nothing since then.

It was a big nothingburger from the start.

1. Banks and other lenders make their own assessments of a property’s value that is going to be used as collateral for a loan. Indeed they would be negligent if they did not. They rely on their own valuations, not the valuation of the borrower.

2. EVERY single last borrower is going to be as generous as possible in counting the goodwill and thus the value of his own property. This is standard among Developers. If what Trump did was criminal then what every Developer does on a routine basis is criminal. You’d have to shut down all real estate development.

3. This was so obviously politically motivated as to be undeniable. The AG of NY CAMPAIGNED on “get Trump at all costs”. She obviously deserves no presumption of professionalism, competence or objectivity given that is what she openly campaigned on. Nobody could even claim that was equal justice under law when a named individual is openly targeted for strictly political reasons.

Given all of the above, they were never going to get a conviction that was going to stand up - yes even in NY.
