Is Putin trying to knock out West's GPS network? EU aviation authorities claim satellites are under constant 'jamming' or 'spoofing' attacks disrupting navigation from Finland to the Mediterranean

Russia has been accused of interfering with the global GPS navigation system during a major Nordic war game in Finland.

European aviation authorities have said signals, heavily used by commercial aircraft, have been affected from Finland, through the Mediterranean and even as far as Iraq.

Disruptions to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), which include GPS, are caused by the 'jamming' or 'spoofing' of satellite signals.

Since the war erupted on February 24, 'jamming and/or possible spoofing has intensified in geographical areas surrounding the conflict zone and other areas,' the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said in an online bulletin Thursday.

Impressive that he can jam the system like that. Makes things more fun for the Europeans.

Airlines may have to put Navigators back in the cockpits.
Well, if there are any navigators still around.

Putin already said that hacking satellites was an act of war, so if his people are hacking satellites, they are committing an act of war. Could be someone else, or it could be Russians being hypocritical because they think they can.

There are several Global Position Systems in operation

US - Global Position System (GPS)

European - Gallieo

Russian Glonass

Chinese Bediou

Most modern phone/GPS devices have chips that can access multiple systems

It makes perfect sense since weapons can and do use GPS. GPS was, after all, A DOD project. Also screws up timing for digital communications.

I remember back in the good old days with LORAN was the primary source for navigation and timing...but that’s several decades ago.

GPS stems largely from my father’s Timation system. See my interview on The John Batchelor Show for details. https://www.thespaceshow.com/show/06-dec-2017/broadcast-3030-hotel-mars-richard-easton

GPS signals are really weak by the time they get all the way down to earth from 23,000 km away. A few watts worth of jamming is all it takes to block civilian signals for hundreds of miles around in line of sight of that jammer. Put the jammer on an aircraft and you can jam country sized well European country sized area’s with ease. The gen3 US GPS have the M code that is specifically designed to be higher powered and jam resistant but only our military and NATO has access to it. Airlines use the L5 and L1 plus L2c signals all of which are much lower powered and easy to jam. The USA and the Europeans used to have LORAN C ground based hyperbolic navigation system with million watt transmitters that was nearly impossible to jam over any significant area. It was shutdown under the Big O to save 25 million per year in operating costs and was the only viable back up to GPS plus it made us invulnerable to advisory jamming and now you know why it was cut off it weakened the USA considerably. The Russians have a identical copy of that system translated to seagull since that what the signals sound like in audio. They never turned it off and they are using it right now in Uke because the Ukes are also jamming the Russian GLONASS system which is the copy of our GPS. Before 1990 most commercial airliners had LORAN C navigation and would today if they still had it be immune to GPS jamming. There is a big push to bring back LORAN in a modern form specifically to back up GPS with a million watt signal a few hundred miles away vs 50 watts from 12000+ miles away. The difference is several orders of magnitude in signal strength.

Thanks for all that info!

This is one of the best examples of why I don’t thing WW3 will be as much fun as others here seem to think.

We basically BLIND OURSELVES militarily (without even making the Russians take out our satellites) and then stick our bucks up in the air to tell Putin that we’ll clobber him. And I know we’ve crippled ourselves in many other military areas too.

Great time to start WW3!

The Russians never turned off their version of LORAN they know it’s jam proof and didn’t have a leader bent on weaking them. They encode theirs in time of war in peace time its interoperable with LORAN C at least it was till we foolishly turned ours off.

The USA always fights with one hand tied back by Fing politicians.

Check out the coverage maps of the Russian loran something should stand out. First hunt is 90 to 100khz can be received up to 10 meters underwater and farther under ice.... They cover the two SLBM bastions with underwater navigation signals that’s no coincidence. 50 meters accuracy is plenty good for SLBMs
Targeting cities , refinery, air bases ect. You only need 3 meter GLONASS for hard targets like silos or bunkers.
