You do know Crimea had almost no Russia residents prior to WWII? It was mix of Tartars, Greeks, Ukrainians, and Jews.

Stalin killed most of the Ukrainians in the 1930s, Hitler did in the Jews, and then Stalin forcibly relocated the Tartars and Greeks in 1944. He replaced the population with Russian speakers in the post-war years.

So really it was a Russian territory for only 10 years from 1944 to 1954 when Khrushchev returned it to Ukraine to make up for some of Stalin’s crimes.

"maybe Zelensky is factoring these into the mix. if russia is hurting as badly as some claim then they cannot sustain the invasion effort for more than a couple of weeks from now..."

It looks to some that unless NATO enters the fray, Zaleski won't have an army left in a couple of weeks.

Russia should take the gloves off now. Then we'll see how firm Zelensky’s demands are. Maybe Zelensky can go down in history as the guy who started WW-III.

Prolonging the pain at the petrol pump? So you care more about that than that Ukrainians are still willing to fight of Putin’s army?

I’m not talking numbers, I’m talking who has had the longest period of it being under their control in fairly recent times. For good or ill. Not interested in the morality or rightness of it. Just the cold facts.

1991 is the new 1967. Ukraine is the new Israel. This is the new playbook.

“Russia should take the gloves off now.”

The problem for Russia is they already did, and under the gloves they have feeble little hands.

Bomb cities into submission? Not possible when any air operations have resulted in unsustainably high attrition rates for Russian planes.

Bombard them with artillery? That require getting trucks full of shells to your guns. Hard to do when every tree hides a soldier with an ATGM ready to destroy your supply convoys.

Longer Zelensky plays winston churchill and seeks a wider war with all the consequences, of which fuel price is a factor, sure I want it to end soon. And I’m seeing people I know who were on the fence getting more pissed with the media circus around him that drags this out.

The sad part is many of the folks here are Putin trolls or at best Putin fan-boys.

Without Western intervention in the air,Ukraine won’t beat Russia. If the West tries a Kosovo or northern Iraq it will be ww3. You think the risk worth taking?

i think zelensky has a flair for showmanship. crimea can be supplied by sea and donbas has loyalty issues. beyond that, russia appears to have committed defensive forces, which might leave its own borders softened and therefore vulnerable to counterattack. once there, zelensky would have the control, and the world is his audience. russians would get a dose of their own medicine, and putin would we on the hot plate for a response, preumeably nuclear and urban shelling would be ruled out. imhp putins weakness is the corrupt russian economy which might be threatened by such an embarrassing feat. putins weakness now is a putsch.

Its not ballsy.. he was likely put into power via a deep state obama, soros n co installed in 2014.
Its just being the puppet he likely is. Taking his orders so the dems here can blame gas and food inflation on Russia.
I was thinking o no not another 3 years of Russia russia Russia... but if the soros and Obama crowd can pull off regime change in Russia and China.. true one world government is a done deal.
These guys are more evil and someday we may look back n say putin was not the most evil one.

> I saw a photo the other day of a Russian carrying a Mosin-nagant PU sniper. That was supposed to have been replaced by the dragunov over 50 years ago.

hmmm, isn’t the mosin-nagant functionally equivalent to the rem 700 pss, in the one shot one kill sense (nb, i am no expert in this stuff)? (the 700 pss is apparently still used in the current us military) (i imagine that the counter argument might be that semi-auto is more appropriate for tank-accompanied infantry though...)

one question is why the russians are not yet advancing into downtown kharkiv even though they have ringed half of the city at close range for several days. one could reasonably posit that they (the russians) are out of the resources needed to perform a full takeover of the city. if one extrapolates the argument to the entire invasion, it could be posited that the russian army is out of gas to perform its original objectives...

Crimea is as Russian as vodka.

As long as you ignore the existence of that "pesky" Tatar minority (they used to constitute the majority of the population before Stalin moved them to "better accommodations").

Regards,

Yeh yeh. Lot of places colonised by Europeans had a majority of some other group there. And they got rid of an awful lot too. Russia did stuff. Britain did. Or Portugal did etc etc. It’s what colonising empires do. I feel ashamed of what was done to Aboriginals in my country. No excuses. It was wrong. But having said that, what’s done is done. There’s no going back. Non Aboriginals are the majority, and we aren’t leaving. Russians aren’t leaving Crimea either. Unless Ukraine wanted to ethnically cleanse them. And that won’t happen either. They don’t want to be part of Ukraine. Get over it
