Trump pushed GOP hawks to the sidelines. Will the invasion of Ukraine bring them back?

While running for president in 2016, Donald Trump promised he would be a different kind of Republican, particularly when it came to foreign policy.

Running on an “America First” platform, he promised to tear up trade deals championed by both parties, misleadingly bragged that he had always been against the Iraq War and promised to have a “very, very good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He also questioned the relevance of the NATO alliance. “We’re taking care of, as an example, the Ukraine. I mean, the countries over there don’t seem to be so interested,” Trump said when discussing NATO in March 2016.

His remarks represented a sea change in Republican thinking about the world, which in Trump’s view had long been dominated by hawkish neoconservatives.

The last Republican president, George W. Bush, had embraced an aggressive foreign policy in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and launched what his administration called the global war on terror. His father, President George H.W. Bush, had been a staunch internationalist. Before that, President Ronald Reagan pursued a confrontational approach with the Soviet Union in the last decade of the Cold War.

I doubt it.

The Ruling Oligarchy seems to be desperate to get the old war fever going again.

You guys need to get your story straight.

On the one hand, all the stories about strong Ukrainian resistance are a lie, and Ukraine will fall any day now to Russia just as Douglas MacGregor predicted.

On the other hand, the war is going to drag out for months as part of some neocon/deep state plot to distract all of us from Covid (or whatever) and put George Soros in charge of us all.

Russiagate.
Chaos on the border.
Suffocating debt.
Persecution of peaceful Jan 6 protestors.
Daily propaganda briefings from the press secretory.
Corrupt FBI, NSA and CIA.
Lawlessness in blue cities.
Incompetent woke military leaders.
Widespread election fraud.
Runaway inflation.

I don't think so.

Why isn't yahoo news this inquisitive about the Dems wanting to go to war and being "hawks"?

That is much more of an anomaly than Republicans being hawks and having a respite for 4 years with DT.

“the war is going to drag out for months as part of some neocon/deep state plot to distract all of us from Covid (or whatever)”

That’s just a side benefit for the globalists. The main strategic reason is to keep Europe isolated from Russia so they don’t get cozy with the cheap Russian energy and become dependent upon them. Ukraine is just a hapless pawn in all this with the corrupt globalist puppet Zelensky at the helm.

Hawks were horrified when Reagan agreed to meet Gorby in Reykjavik, they felt Reagan betrayed them.

Is the war going to be over in a few days, as McGregor claims, or is it going to drag on for weeks and months?

This is one of those Yahoo articles that doesn’t allow comments, because commenters might provide more insight than the article.

Man, have you been reading the posts here? As Trump’s influence fades, their old latent neoconism re-emerges. The responsibility for the twenty year quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan belongs to me, thee and GWB. Count me out of this one. Nothing short of pulling Putin out of his spider hole in Moscow will satisfy many of these ex MAGA proponents.
