The iodine tablets only protect the Thyroid gland. No protection from the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma radiation on your body. Not very useful in a major fallout scenario. Maybe for children, Nagasaki and Hiroshima showed children with major thyroid illnesses later in life, not so much for adults.
Better to buy a Dosimeter to see what your total Rad intake is….200 rads you are walking dead, and don’t know it. Aeroflot commonly provides flt crews flying at altitude ( 32-40K ft) dosimeters to monitor their radiation intake at those altitudes.

I don’t know one way or the other if iodide pills help protect you in a nuclear fallout, I see a lot of people jumping on the band wagon buying them thinking the USA could be nuked.
Could it happen, absolutely it could, could iodide pills help you survive, I’m not sure of that, personally if I am really close to the blast zone, who cares, I would rather be vaporized instead of suffering a slow painful death from radiation poisoning.
All the prepping in the world won’t help you if a nuclear warhead detonates near you, so I don’t worry about something I can’t control, if I live remotely and might survive the initial blast and fallout, then we might have another story.
