My brother lives there! Will it affect elk hunting?

“Boston is sea level”.

Yes, I know.

I drive through “The Big Dig” twice a year. I was also born there, but don’t remember anything about that. ;)

A Boston church bell is likely to be elevated, hence the ringing during quakes.

More concerned about the Cascadia fault off the west coast. It has been fairly regular every ~300 years for over 2000 years. It last hit in January 1700.

Here’s a cool USGS quake tracker.

Hi dforest.

Unfortunately, given that the media's motto for 60+ years has been "If it bleeds, it leads", all they push in our faces is injury, death, disaster, and freakout.

Even FreeRepublic is not immune to this effect. There's an occasional thread that expresses the simple joy of a sunny day, or a bird singing in the backyard, or the realization that we are alive in God's magnificent Creation. But they're rare.

Well, today was a sunny day (Upstate NY), and the birds were singing in my backyard, and I was filled with gratitude that I am alive in God's magnificent Creation. I hereby express my happiness, and share it with you, that you might enjoy some as well.

FRegards,
dayglored.

Lemme state for the record:

This is all propaganda, folks.

Coincidentally (not) the local headline today was “It could happen at any time”...

...referencing the ‘big one’ in the Pacific Northwest.

All of this follows a pattern following the decline of Omicron, including on Ukraine.

...Unfortunately, they put their Emergency Response Supply Center right on this fault in Memphis TN.

LOL! I've recently moved into the Danger Zone, but I'm not too concerned because I've always lived in Earthquake Danger Zones. Los Angeles, Central Utah, Las Vegas, St Louis, and now Little Rock.

I can't even count the earthquakes I've been in, but I prefer them to tornados.

“Will it affect elk hunting?”

Most of the elk moved to Utah already. And they probably used uhaul trucks to get there. Everyone else does.

Not worth worrying about. Also not worth worrying about a "super-eruption" in Yellowstone. Thanks BusterDog.

I respectfully disagree on this one. Yellowstone is not something someone in Memphis should worry too much about. But, New Madrid is something people should be aware of, and they should have a plan.

The largest recorded earthquake in the US was there. It WILL happen again, as it has fairly regularly for centuries.

Thanks VL. It could, and according to these experts, sometime in the next 50 years. All the skyscrapers in the great plains will tip over, and all the mighty dams will give way, washing away millions. /jk

Respectfully, the architecture and even the population distribution (and power grid) of the region is probably better prepared by default than the earthquake-prone areas. The big danger in such an event would be urban rioters and looters.

I’d hate to see the small number of deaths that could result from the quake itself. Even here in Michigan we’ve had some (mostly barely) detectable tremors. The worst one (and literally the only one I’ve ever felt) caused a loud noise, sounded like a vehicle hit the back of the house. There was no damage to the house or anywhere in visible range. It was a puzzle until an hour or so later, when I got a text from someone asking if I’d felt it.
