The proper name of the holiday is Washington’s Birthday even though it is only occasionally on his actual birthday.

It was always on the 22nd when I was a kid.

Of course it was, then Congress, in its great wisdom, decided to move many holidays to Mondays to create long weekends thus destroying historical connections to the events being commemorated.

When Washington was a kid, he celebrated his birthday on Feb. 11th. I don’t think he ever got used to the idea of the 22nd being his birthday. He was 20 years old when Great Britain made the change to the “New Style” calendar.
