I think Vanessa Redgrave started it off in 1977 when she got on stage and bashed Israel. I remember when I was a kid in the 1970s the Oscars was a huge thing on TV, my mom and Aunt would have parties the day it broadcast and then we had to guess who the winners would be. Today at 83 she wants nothing to do with it.

Or maybe it was 1973, when Marlon Brando sent Sacheen Littlefeather to the stage to decline the Best Actor award for THE GODFATHER to protest Hollywood's portrayal of injuns.
