From Fredrick Douglas: “What shall we do with the Negro, I answer, “do nothing with us!” Your doing with us has already played mischief with us! If the apples are rotten on the tree, if they are worm eaten and ready to fall let them!I am not for fastening them there except by nature's plan! And if the Negro can not stand on his own legs, than let him fail also, all I ask is that he be allowed to stand on his own legs! If you will untie his hands and leave him alone than I think he will live."

Do you know how many Freepers and talk radio neos claim king was a Republican

A lot...crazy

His dad was if I’m not mistaken

The irony is a moderate dem and a rank and file GOPe then were the same essential ...them and the liberal Dems voted in all the bullshit that talk radio loves to claim credit for now

I bet Sean will pay broken voice homage all afternoon as he interrupts

Only conservative GOP and conservative mostly southern Dems voted or opposed against that crap....

Reagan for example ....Barry too

JFK was absolutely not a Saint, but was to the Right of most Republicans today. He would be kicked out of the Democrat party. He was for the Gold Standard and sound money, and tax cuts. America moved sharply left with the monstrous LBJ after he was Assassinated.

I think the so called “Civil Rights Movement”, led by MLK, did accomplish some much needed change in attitudes in white America.
**********************************************************

No sir. That’s why I said “some” and I referred to “attitudes”.........not statutes and generally accepted practice.

One example of “good attitudes” though is that I’m old enough to remember Whites Only being written in black letters on the opaque glass of men’s rooms in the State Capitol Building in Austin.

Frederick Douglass was at least an actual and provable Republican who held appointive office (at least as Minister to Haiti).

Jackie Robinson was a mixed bag. While he did endorse Nixon in 1960, he fell for the siren song of the Kennedys and the Dems. He similarly savagely attacked Sen. Goldwater in 1964 for not supporting the CRA overreach, claiming he now had “a better understanding of how it must have felt to be a Jew in Hitler’s Germany”. The kind of over-the-top and vile rhetoric used in the Demonrat arsenal of hate ever since. He was hired by Nelson Rockefeller, but then endorsed Humphrey in 1968 over Nixon.

Yes, MLK, Senior was a Republican, but only until before the 1960 elections when he switched from Nixon to JFK. Sadly, he stood by and endorsed the racist Jimmy Carter for President despite his running an anti-Black campaign for Governor in 1970 against ex-Gov. Carl Sanders.

Disagree with you there. You can’t judge him by 1960 standards, anyhow, expecting him to remain stationary (by that reckoning, look at RFK cuddling up to Sen. Joe McCarthy and Ted the Swimmer as a devout pro-lifer). These guys would jettison any position on a dime to win themselves votes and be with the mainstream of the Demonrat left.

Remember that Reagan left the Demonrat party at that time with JFK because he WAS a left-winger. There hasn’t been a non-Socialist or non-Communist nominee for President of that party since John W. Davis in 1924 (the left went nuts in that election and endorsed third-party Socialist RINO Sen. La Follette, Sr. of Wisconsin).

If JFK could’ve pushed the orgiastic leftist horror of Great Society on his watch, he would’ve. He could not have gone full-bore because he didn’t have enough leftists in Congress in 1960 and 1962. But they did after the 1964 elections, and Goldwater was hoping to face off with JFK that year in order to debate (and stop) that agenda.

Yes, but still, all of the future of civil rights was on him, and he bore it.

By today's standards he was a Conservative . At the time he was considered a moderate to Mod. Liberal. But Nixon turned out to be far to the Left. Yes, JFK would be to the left of most of us, but not even a liberal. RFK was against most welfare. That was it for the Democrat party when he died. Liberals, and then Leftists took it over completely.

Also, Goldwater joked about Nuclear War. I could not have voted for him 1964. I would have voted for John G. Schmitz in 1972 though against the very Liberal Nixon and the Socialist McGovern.

For a time, but then helped lead the remaining Black citizenry down the primrose path of Demonrat party destruction. Not even the most virulent Klansman in his wildest dreams could’ve accomplished what so-called “liberals” have done to the Black community. Millions of deaths and the destruction of the family. Even the Klan couldn’t destroy the Black family.

Despite his many flaws King’s message that people should be judged by their character and not skin color is still relevant and important. Too bad the Rat party has abandoned it.

We need to make that common and override their messages.

JFK was a big government guy. The Demonrat party was taken over by the left in 1896 when they purged the center-right Bourbons of Grover Cleveland in favor of William Jennings Bryan. They never looked back. JFK could not have been nominated in 1960 if he was not a left-winger, which he was.

You could listen to some of the speeches or rhetoric at the time and perhaps mistake some of them for being “Conservative”, but that’s only because we’ve been moved so far to the left. They’d have jettisoned those positions in time because it was untenable for them to hold them as Dems. Remember that in 1932, FDR ran to Hoover’s right(!) on the economy. It was all bull$hit.

I guarantee had Nixon been sworn in as President in Jamuary 1961 as the rightful winner of that election, we’d have had a vastly different country. A Free Cuba, a victory in Vietnam, more moderate and sane approaches to civil rights, with half or more of Blacks voting GOP, no Marxist orgy of “Great Society” and other mega-welfare state horrors. By 1969, it was too late to turn that ship around and he couldn’t repair the damage done by his predecessors.
