Kulldorff & Bhattacharya Respond: The Collins and Fauci Attack on Traditional Public Health
The Epoch Times ^ | December 31, 2021 Updated: January 1, 2022 | Martin Kulldorff, Jay Bhattacharya

On Oct. 4, 2020, with Prof. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University, we wrote the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD). Our purpose was to express our grave concerns over the inadequate protection of the vulnerable and the devastating harms of the lockdown pandemic policy adopted by much of the world; We proposed an alternative strategy of focused protection.

The key scientific fact on which the GBD was based—a more than thousand-fold higher risk of death for the old compared to the young—meant that better protection of the old would minimize COVID deaths. At the same time, opening schools and lifting lockdowns would reduce the collateral harm to the rest of the population.

The Declaration received enormous support, ultimately attracting signatures from over 50,000 scientists and medical professionals and over 800,000 members of the public. Our hope in writing was two-fold. First, we wanted to help the public understand that—contrary to the prevailing narrative—there was no scientific consensus in favor of lockdown. In this, we succeeded.

Second, we wanted to spur a discussion among public health scientists about how to better protect the vulnerable, both those living in nursing homes (where ~40 percent of all COVID deaths have occurred) and those living in the community. We provided specific proposals for focused protection in the GBD and supporting documents to spur the discussion. Though some in public health did engage civilly in productive discussions with us, in this aim we had limited success.

Unbeknownst to us, our call for a more focused pandemic strategy posed a political problem for Dr. Francis Collins and Dr. Anthony Fauci...

To me, another of their major crimes has been the demonization and even prohibition of alternate treatments and preventatives such as HCQ, Ivermectin, Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Zinc, Quercetin, NAC, Melatonin, and even some common mouthwashes and nasal sprays. Studies have shown that these and other products - both OTC and Rx - have been found to be effective in preventing the disease or reducing the severity of symptoms. None of these are magic bullets with 100% efficacy, but neither are the vaccines.

The fact that these items are not 100% effective has made them the objects of dismissive ridicule, and the risks of using them have been wildly exaggerated even as the risks of the vaccines have been covered-up and minimized.

The US ranks 21st WORST in the world in Covid deaths-per-million, and all of this can't be blamed on co-morbidities like obesity and diabetes.

You can easily buy Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Zinc, Quercetin, NAC, Melatonin, and even some common mouthwashes and nasal sprays on AMZ and in drug and health stores. Agree government should have promoted their use, but you do not need permission to buy, use and research them.

Why don’t more people do their research? THAT is the big question.
I’ve actually used the entire list above except Quercetin every morning for the last 50 years because I read the right books then. Not rocket science. My MD knows this and did not suggest jab for me.

Sanity exists.

I agree that demonization has been a problem and very wrong. However, nobody has prohibited us as individuals from taking vitamins. They have made it more difficult to get NAC or HCQ or non-veterinary Ivermectin and I agree that's a problem. Nonetheless, we have most of these items on hand and we've been actively using them in our household to stay healthy. Hubs and I both infected with COVID after catching it from our hospital-worker son. Our symptoms are pretty mild and far from life threatening. I think it's unfortunate (and I'm being diplomatic) that our public health services and medical community have not been more forthcoming with home-care guidelines that work. I believe they know better but there is an agenda at work and it's not to our benefit.

I also use several of those products, but it would be interesting to know how many people are using those things for Covid mitigation; I’ve never seen a survey on it. I am sure that the generally hostile reaction to self-managed preventative treatment has discouraged many people from doing it.

I agree that it would be interesting. I'm in a very liberal community and don't hear much of such things. Most of my vitamins and supplements are from online sources. There have been spot shortages in those, suggesting that other people are stocking up. Chain drug stores around us are low on cough/cold products and lots of other things too, but that's partly supply chain related.
