What Putin is, is a man of ambition, and back in Soviet times, the only place for a man of ambition was the Party or the Security Aparatus. He would have just as easily served the Czar in The Okhrana, if the Czar was still in power.

Except that there were many other bad actors ready to take power. No one knows if things would have been better without Yeltsin, which is why I didn’t go there.
I do tend to agree though that the breakup of the Soviet Union was badly botched, and there were a lot of missed opportunities.

Agree...as if ANYONE in power there actually believed in Communism. They all knew how pathetic it was, compared to capitalism...but it was how they stayed in power.
As to Putin serving any master, here’s an easy way to verify your claim: Just ask are we to believe that EVERYONE (or even anyone) who works for Biden believes in Capitalism? After all, they are working for a Capitalist government.
