Road Trip: Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi

MSkeeslerafb3

Keesler Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Biloxi, a city along the Gulf Coast in Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The base is named in honor of aviator 2d Lt Samuel Reeves Keesler Jr., a Mississippi native killed in France during the First World War. The base is home of Headquarters, Second Air Force (2 AF) and the 81st Training Wing (81 TW) of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC).

The base has specialized in ground trade training since its opening in 1941 during World War II. It has high-quality technical schools and absorbed units moved from other bases under the Base Realignment and Closure Act.

The 81 Training Wing replaced Keesler Training Center in July 1993, taking on the mission of specialized technical training in electronics, avionics, computers, operations, maintenance, weather, radar, precision measurement, network controllers and personnel and information management for USAF, AF Reserve, Air National Guard, other DoD agencies and foreign nations.

Keesler AFB received severe damage from Hurricane Katrina on 29 Aug 2005. The wing's relief and recovery mission, Operation Dragon Comeback, restored the base to full mission readiness within a month.

The 333rd Training Squadron provides officer cyberspace initial skills training and enlisted cyberspace advanced skills training. In addition the squadron is also responsible for the development, revision, and instruction of technical courses supporting global operations.

"Excellence" is the watchword of Keesler's largest support organization, the 81st Mission Support Group. Working with a team of more than 1,600 personnel, the Mission Support Group provides administrative, personnel, civil engineering, transportation, morale and welfare, recreational, communications, supply, base security, and contracting services to an estimated 75,000 people who use base facilities and resources with a vision of delivering support excellence to enable Keesler’s mission and quality of life.

What Should I Say?
Read: Nehemiah 2:1–6

I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king. Nehemiah 2:4–5

When I stopped to browse through a box of books marked “C. S. Lewis” at a used bookshop, the store owner appeared. As we chatted about the available titles, I wondered if he might be interested in the faith that inspired much of Lewis’ writing. I prayed silently for guidance. Information from a biography came to mind, and we began to discuss how C. S. Lewis’ character pointed to God. In the end, I was thankful that a quick prayer had reoriented our conversation to spiritual matters.

Nehemiah paused to pray before a pivotal moment in a conversation with King Artaxerxes in Persia. The king had asked how he could help Nehemiah, who was distraught over Jerusalem’s destruction. Nehemiah was the king’s servant and therefore in no position to ask for favors, but he needed one—a big one. He wanted to restore Jerusalem. So, he “prayed to the God of heaven” before asking to leave his job so he could reestablish the city (Nehemiah 2:4–5). The king consented and even agreed to help Nehemiah make travel arrangements and procure timber for the project.

The Bible encourages us to pray “on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests” (Ephesians 6:18). This includes moments when we need courage, self-control, or sensitivity. Praying before we speak helps us give God control of our attitude and our words.

How might He want to direct your words today? Ask Him and find out!Jennifer Benson Schuldt

What patterns of speech do you need God’s help to change? What types of situations in your life could benefit most from prayer?

Dear God, I surrender my words to You. Use them for Your glory. Help them to inspire and encourage others.

My late father when though Army Air Force basic training at Kessler Army Air Field in 1943. I remember seeing a pillow with the USAAF insignia and the name when I was a kid. I think I still have the pillow, packed away in my mother’s cedar chest.

Went through cross-training back in ‘79. Relocated to the area early this year and the base doesn’t look the same. A lot of changes/modernization.
