MADISON, Wis. – A Madison school board candidate who described herself as “trans-a-phobic” last week has dropped out of the race.
Mary Jo Walters announced she would withdraw her campaign for Seat 3 in a Facebook post Friday.
“I am opting out of the run for many personal reasons,” Walters said. “I’d like to thank all that engaged in these discussions.”
She now plans to start a book club.
Walters drew criticism after posting transphobic comments on social media. In an interview Monday, she called herself gender critical.
The former candidate for lieutenant governor wanted to reverse the district’s decision to implement gender-neutral bathrooms. She cited anti-transgender comments from Dave Chappelle and J.K. Rowling, in a prepared statement she read before the interview.
Walters had been running unopposed until Monday when her comments inspired Shepherd Janeway to enter the race.
Janeway is a trans, non-binary teaching artist affiliated with the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Whoopensocker program since 2018.
“We, as a community, sent a clear message that we support all students,” they said in a statement Saturday. “We won’t support someone who openly plans to exclude and target marginalized students.”
The board seat that Walters and Janeway were running for will be vacated by Chris Carusi in the spring.

WI MMSD School Board GI FIGHT: Nov 29-Dec 10, 2021 This is a notice to formally state my withdrawal from the campaign for Seat 3 on the MMSD School Board. The last week and a half has shown that this campaign helped shed light on the deeper problems with gender than what current activist movements advocate for. Those movements state that violent behavior does not come from the inclusion of all bodies in all spaces, but rather that bigotry is itself violent if women want separate space from men. This is the core criticism of feminism, but such advocacy for girls on a sexed basis has been dismissed to favor "all the good people." It is indeed difficult for communities to believe their own isn't immune to the potential for sexual harassment and crime.
The pushback I received for discussing gender identity policies in the schools was more than I can protest on my own, but for those who are willing to be skeptical of transgender activism, see the larger criticism blogs by Jennifer Bilek: https://www.the11thhourblog.com/profile/jbportraits/profile and books are available here: Advocates Protecting Children (APC): www.advocatesprotectingchildren.org/shop
I am opting out of the run for many personal reasons and will now lead a book club that will meet monthly, virtually, starting: THIS FEBRUARY.
I’d like to thank all that engaged in these discussions. It was the center of this campaign. This response is a good start to talk about ending the teaching of Gender Identity (GI) in schools and a reversal of the policies that go along with that. We need to start with a return to single sex bathrooms, locker rooms and sports. Girls deserve this. Forced pronoun use in the schools is a denial of females as separate people, with sex-based reasons to their own bodies' privacy. Separate bathrooms and locker rooms are a reflection of that respect of girls and of women.

I’m not any phobic. I fear little. Certainly not faggots. But I do fear a Marxist takeover. “ Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway”. John Wayne.
Transnauseous is the term you’re looking for.
I’m assuming (this being Madison) that the previously-unopposed Mary Jo Walters is a Democrat.
Seems like an opportunity for the Republicans to enter a candidate to provide a choice. But odds are they won’t.
Transnauseous! LoL. That just became my “identifier.”
Yeah, she’s a Dem. As usual, they eat their own if anyone dares have a cogent/sane thought in their head. ;)
Just pointing out the never-ending hypocrisy of Socialist bastions. :)

<><>it’s not okay for a CNN producer to groom children,
<><>but it is okay when public school administrators do it.

The 44-year-old CNN producer from Stamford CT, who worked ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with Chris Cuomo according to the Daily Mail, ‘used Google Hangouts and Kik to convince the mothers that a “woman is a woman regardless of her age,” and that “women should be sexually subservient and inferior to men,” according to a Friday indictment.
In June of 2020, Griffin advised a mother of 9- and 13-year-old daughters that the mother’s responsibility was to see that her older daughter was “trained properly.” Griffin later transferred over $3,000 to the mother for plane tickets so the mother and her 9-year-old daughter could fly from Nevada to Boston’s Logan airport.
The mother and child flew to Boston in July of 2020, where Griffin picked them up in his Tesla and drove them to his Ludlow house. At the house, the daughter was directed to engage in, and did engage in, unlawful sexual activity.
“We take the charges against Mr. Griffin incredibly seriously,” a CNN spokesperson told the Mail on Friday. “We only learned of his arrest this afternoon and have suspended him pending investigation.”
We need people who make heterophobic comments to drop out. DNA deniers!
Conservatism nowadays is no place for quitters.
I like your new rallying cry for the cause: “DNA Deniers!”
I agree. Usually there’s no reason to fear the mentally ill, but it’s always a good idea to be alert when around them.
Transphobic means that you fear chemically altered and surgically mutilated individuals. Disgust, scorn, maybe, but fear? C’mon, man!
The trans cartel is truthphobic.
