Australia only became a penal colony because the Brits could not send all the prisoners to the penal colonies in America due to the Revolutionary War in 1776. Georgia was one of those colonies with both convicts and “indentured servants”. The first prisoners didn’t arrive in Botany Bay until 1788. So Australia can thank the USA for it being populated.
