Scott Morrison has criticised Daniel Andrews' proposed laws that would give him sweeping new powers to manage pandemics.
The laws, which have passed Victoria's lower house and will be debated in the upper house next week, would give the premier the power to declare a pandemic for an unlimited period of time even if there are no cases of a virus.
The move would let the health minister make 'any order' he deems reasonably necessary' which could include lockdowns, vaccine mandates, enforced mask-wearing and much more, with fines of up to $454,350 for rule-breakers.
The Prime Minister said Premier's bid to secure more power was 'confusing' when Australia is finally opening up after 18 months of Covid-19 restrictions - and said Aussies want governments to stop interfering in their lives.
'Victorians have gone through the worst of the pandemic... I can understand their frustration where governments are seeking to have more involvement in their lives,' he told radio 3AW on Friday.
'We're going in the opposite direction... Australians have had enough of governments telling them what to do.
'That's been necessary for a couple of years but we're coming out of that now and I think the timing of this is confusing.'
But Mr Morrison refused to criticise any harder, saying he would leave that job to the Victorian Opposition.
'Well, look, I'm always respectful of the Federation, and I am respectful. I don't give lectures to through this pandemic. I respect the Federation,' he said.
'I work with all the premiers and chief ministers but the key message about this is it's your call, your responsibility and don't expect the federal government to go and argue your case when it's not a policy that we have.'

And the Aussies just take it like sheep - as we probably will.
The Enabling Act. The declared “pandemic” has no over view and no restrictions. The chancellor of Victoria can rule by decree if he / she claims there is a pandemic exists anywhere, example Togo. Yup, there is some kind of sickness in Togo and I am ruling by decree forever.
Never give up your guns. This is what happens when you do.
“ would give the premier the power to declare a pandemic for an unlimited period of time even if there are no cases of a virus.”
This. Is. Communist. Totalitarian. BS.
The fact of the matter is that there are ALWAYS pandemics happening in the world every day.
This is not to help - this is giving one man total police powers over the public.
To wit - a dictatorship.
There's no unambiguous protection to avoid the Premier simply making a false declaration if they choose to.
People who support the legislation are talking about various controls that, in theory, should prevent this - and they are right, they should.
But something so important shouldn't only be protected by conventions and traditions. Those are meant to be the last ditch protections when everything else fails - not the primary protections.
I’ve seen the big crowds in Melbourne on Saturday’s and it looks like a political campaign is on now in Victoria.
Certain media want to just keep putting out the notion of “anti-vaxxers” protesting but its obvious others are there for other reasons.
I’ve been worried the whole time.
Marshalling resources to fight this legislation is the reason I’ve been so pissed off about being forced to waste time on made up crap.
Local media is being quite clear that the current protests are about a lot more than just mandatory vaccination policies - although certainly some of the protesters still have that as their primary issue.
I think the actual complexities are probably considered too confusing for overseas audiences. It’s easier to just focus on the anti-vax angle.
Are your legislators as out of touch as they seem (just like in the US)? It says the Lower House voted to give this power to the Premier but it can’t be very popular with people.
