It is not the right of a business to cancel a contract, costing the other parties to the contract many thousands of dollars worth of damages, on a whim.

This was not a natural disaster.

Right you are. The hotel probably cancelled the contract solely on a whim (as you noted). The conference sponsors should certainly sue the hotel.

But I wonder if hidden deep in the contract there is some sort of morality clause. The hotel might try to use that as an excuse. Sue ‘em anyway and let an Idaho jury sort it out.
