The deceased would be alive and the family unthreatened if he had been hospitalized for his psychosis.
Mental illness is a way overused excuse for people who just choose to do evil things or make bad choices.
So where was his wife? Inquiring minds.

I attended a talk by the then county sheriff about 10 year ago detailing when it is legal to shoot trespassers on the property or house invaders and when it is not. If they won’t leave when told to, make verbal threats, have a visible weapon or claim they have a weapon, outnumber you, or are young and you are not - all legal shoots.
Can’t shoot if someone steals your car though. Someone was convicted for that some years ago.
