China is removing the domes and minarets from thousands of mosques across the country. Authorities say the domes are evidence of foreign religious influence and are taking down overtly Islamic architecture as part of a push to sinicize historically Muslim ethnic groups — to make them more traditionally Chinese.
The campaign comes amid rising Islamophobia in China and growing religious restrictions, touching off a discussion across the country among scholars, ethnic policy regulators and historically Muslim Chinese communities about what exactly should be considered "Chinese" to begin with.

Seems only the modern mosques are affected, any old and ancient ones are almost exactly in the style of Confucius or taoist or Buddhist temples

I didn’t know much about China’s history before listening to it - and it is a detailed yet engrossing listen.
To the point here — China has violently suppressed any non-Huaxhi / Han influences for centuries. It did so against Buddhism and against Christianity.
They want to sinicize Islam - but the thing is that Islam, unlike Christianity, is intimately linked to one ethnicity, Hejaz Arabs. Mosques must have minarets. Domes maybe not,
but minarets to call out to prayer is a must.
And, the Saudis have been instrumental in pushing the view that any non-hejaz Arab influence is shirk.

Their Marxism is decisive evidence of pervasive foreign political influence. I wonder when they plan to rid themselves of that particular sort of Western hegemony.
To each country their own, could be said. For centuries China’s adopted much from other countries and then fashioned or called it their own. The key is whoever is in authority calls it.
Much easier to just pull those places, it is super target practice, or demolition practice.

Yeah. Also, China has a very violent history of overthrowing governments they don’t like.
This one is overdue. Islam is obviously a threat for different reasons than real religions are. Islam is a fascist form of government disguised as a religion.
I live in their shadow in HK and their threat is growing here too. Massively.
