I went to college in Frostburg many years ago. I concur that western Maryland is very different from the rest of Maryland. And that western Maryland is very similar to West Virginia, socially, culturally, economically, and politically.
“Areas in Western Maryland have been thinking about seceding or creating a separate state for a while now.”
But now they go a little further: a telling rejection of Dem “progressivism” IMHO.
Why would a parasite allow the host organism to walk away?
I think that’s what they’ve been concerned about for years. This isn’t new.
Maryland is a small state, but with a very diverse political population. Areas like Western MD and the Eastern Shore are tired of being screwed by the lib-dominated Balto-Washington corridor.
I looked at 80 acres there a while back. Free gas.
I’m in SW Virginia, and from what I see the demand for seccession is addressed by more money from the state to such areas.
But that leaves less money for “favored” areas.
... Fascinating politics.
Big deal to leave one state for another too.
Md eastern shore counties should joint up and ditch Baltimore.
I’d hate to see that because there is still some hope for Pennsylvania, as well as Virginia.
Maryland is a complete write off. Ideally, D.C. would be stripped of its three votes and the people of the district returned to Maryland—which would gain a seat that would be reliably blue, but this would reduce the number of electoral votes by three and the number of reliably blue votes by two, so a net gain. 268 carries the day, no tie.
Md eastern shore counties should joint up and ditch Baltimore.
Yes, it’s just one mistake after another.
Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.
The only hope for Pennsylvania is for Philly and the ‘burb counties become part of NJ.
You can always just pick up and move, like folks in California and New York are doing
(We’ve actually been looking at West Virginia, or the mountains of NC.)
That would still work—but the pubs do have both houses and occasionally elect someone.
As for NY—
I’ll listen to Miami 2017 again.
And Oregon, My Oregon . . . .
Nuke Portland.
Don't know where you are now...
But the big drawback to many rural areas is the lack of medical care.
Otherwise, the recent political polarization of the media makes one, with proper views, more welcome.
Yup. Same thing with Eastern and Western Washington. Like night and day. I spent 3 sems at WSU before transferring to Stanford. Here’ was the difference: I got to eastern Wa. pawn shops and it was full of guns. I go to pawn shops near Seattle, it’s full of stereos.
Hell, I live on an acre and a quarter. I have a hard enough time keeping it up. But 80 acres? It better be 79 acres of forest.
If the 3 western MD counties become WV counties the MD might become solid blue.
Oh! Wait!
I love every part of the Piedmont, Catoctins, the Great Valley, the Ridge and Valley province, and the Piedmont Plateau.
I hope secession works out.
What’s next?
Loudoun, Clarke, Frederick Counties leave the Blue NoVa ?
Don’t make me more depressed.
I forget I’ll be screwed big time if these secession threats work. Stuck with Montgomery County mores.
So, YOU’RE our guy in MoCo!
That’s a tough row to hoe.
Find a home in Ijamsville… better yet, Martinsburg…
