A prominent climate physicist has resigned from one of his roles at the University of California, Berkeley, after he said faculty members would not agree to invite a guest lecturer to the school who had come under fire for his political views.
The lecturer, Dorian Abbot, a geophysicist, has been criticized for opposing affirmative action programs and other initiatives to promote diversity, equity and inclusion at colleges and universities....
...The Massachusetts Institute of Technology this month rescinded a lecture invitation to Abbot, a geophysicist and associate professor at the University of Chicago, amid public backlash over an op-ed he co-wrote in Newsweek that argued in favor of a “Merit, Fairness, and Equality” framework on campuses as an alternative to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts,...
...Cohen said, institutions also have a responsibility to consider the communities their students and faculties are a part of.
“It comes down to who is being harmed,” she said. “Universities don’t have a responsibility to platform people who are harming others.”...

DEI is just a new name for affirmative action, which has been around for around 60 years. When does it end?
The intolerance and the lack of self-awareness of the left is breathtaking. They’re all for diversity when it comes to outward appearance... but diversity of thought, they won’t allow it! At a university!!
When political warfare spreads to every aspect of life, every opinion a person has on every subject under the sun, and only *one* opinion is allowed, this is what you call totalitarianism.
Excellent comment.
Except no one feels that way.
Just like South Africa. A success that laid the foundation for global implementation.
Except no one feels that way.
Exactly. They can't come out and say that they oppose people who advocate "equal opportunity" (which is the law, btw), so they have to pretend they are motivated by something that sounds like they care. But in reality, they know they are on thin ice, legally.
It's probably time for a good lawyer to challenge all these "diversity, equity, and inclusion" programs as unconstitutional, as a direct contradiction to the principles of "equal opportunity" and "equal protection".
Good for him. These programs are cancer and destructive.
It is not enough for the SJW to avoid people and places s/he finds offensive. No, everyone else must be prevented from hearing the wrongthink too!
This man is a geophysicist. Were I to attend one of his lectures, I would be going to hear him speak on geophysics, not his political views, woke or otherwise.
And the lecture being canceled is on climate—NOT race or diversity or affirmative action.
The scientist “harmed” them already, by having opinions that, while having nothing to do with the topic being discussed, he said previously.
It really should be Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity...
It ought to.
Some of the most straitjacketed people I have run across are scientists.
I mean, after my whackjob SIL of course.
Dorian Abbot was on Tucker last night.
See my tagline!
Perhaps after DEICIDE?
MIT President Reif sent an email to members of the MIT community. They did not feel Professor Abbot was a good speaker for a public outreach event. They have invited him to speak on campus. They regret that members of the community have suffered online targeting and hate email.
Coincidentally, MIT extended an invitation to a fundraising event. I would follow the science, but the science has left MIT.
Jonathan Gruber, I would note, is still a professor at MIT.
And MIT donor Jeffrey Epstein is still a homicide victim.
