How terrifying. I consider myself to be lucky, given all the hitchhiking and free hippie living I did in the early 1970s. We thought we were such idealists.
Lucky you managed to avoid Charles Manson.
(hitchhiking)
He thought his Corvette would get him a girl. He had no idea. (Movie)
Sobering and it keeps me from chuckling in any way. At least some of these wannabe commies probably would have smartened up over time. Most had family that loved them. Horrifying really.

My sister age 16-17 would hitchhike with her best friend all the time in the early 70’s around our town.
She cringes thinking back about it now.
In the 60s and70s I rode my thumb extensively. I got out of moving cars a couple of times when the drivers got weird. In 65 got a ride in a station wagon that the occupants were too drunk to drive so they picked up a driver. I soon realized that the occupants did not match the household goods in the back end of the car. When one of them fired a Raven at a road sign I was convinced the car was stolen. Coming to Mobile at 3AM I asked did they want me to be careful or were they in a hurry. They said hurry so I floored it all the way through Mobile sliding around corners trying to attract a cop. As they finally sobered a bit west of Mobile I said thanks for the ride but I go south at this next intersection wondering if they would let me out. They did. It was two young guys and a Mexican pay-for-play girl.
