Todd Akin is the guy that was so bad, the DNC and DSCC quickly realized he would help the super unpopular Claire McCaskill win reelection in 2012, and they ran ads attacking all major GOP primary candidates
except Akin.
It gave McCaskill a six-year reprieve before she was unceremoniously tossed out by the voters in Missouri in 2018.
