You are absolutely, unequivocally correct. That said, it isn't a paradox. It's expected.

Politics and academics attract narcissists, and narcissists have a very narrow world view that prevents them from EVER questioning themselves. Believing that they are at the apex of human thought is what makes them feel special, and feeling special is like oxygen for them.

Yeah, but they make up for it by (a) never admitting they're wrong, and (b) demanding to run everyone else's life.
