The decaying body of an Army veteran went undiscovered at
a Massachusetts facility for a month — because no one
bothered to look in an emergency exit stairwell,
according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
A 45-page report released Thursday detailed the
disappearance and death of Timothy White, 62, whose
“significantly decayed” corpse was discovered in June
2020 in a stairwell at the Bedford Veterans Quarters
in Massachusetts.
White, who had recently been homeless, started living at
the privately operated, VA-owned building in January 2020.
He was reported missing from his single-occupancy room on
May 13 and lived just down the hall from where his
body was found nearly a month later on June 12 —
having never left the building, according to the report by
the VA’s Office of Inspector General.

Loss of words.
How filthy and putrid must that place be that no one could detect the odor of a decomposing body?
I thought the same thing.
Government care on display. Not saying this couldn’t have happened on Trump’s watch, but it would’ve been far less likely. Fear of consequences is a great motivator for better behavior . . . the reason drug addicts in Singapore don’t often fail their third try at rehab.
Forget about firing anyone.
The VA should (a) find an alternate private outfit to subcontract the residence job to, (b) and then cancel the contract with the present contractor, due to mismanagement resulting in extreme negligence.
No one from the VA should have been needed for the facility operator to know, and insure, ALL parts of the facility needed to be checked for the missing veteran.
Government at its best
For crying out loud.
It had to stink to high heaven, and that means such conditions are not unusual there.
And nobody even searched the building. They just decided “homeless bum vet” probably walked away.
Avoid hospitals more than the plague.
A stairwell used by no one for a month? I guess only the Navy passes the word “Sweepers, man your brooms; clean sweepdown fore and aft...Sweep down all decks, ladders and passageways. Empty all refuse in the designated containers” any more.
To whit, why was this man declared missing with a police report filed? The negligence runs wide and deep here.
better abandoned in the stairwell than abandoned in Afghanistan
hopefully at least the damned hospital will give him a discount on his room rate for the last month’s “residency”
Question ANHYONE who's prints are most recent prints on door knob. Are there prints on top of those of the deceased?
I'll betcha at LEAST a guard knew that body was there, but didn't want to be involved. Or possibly someone else even knew that body was there.
INVESTIGATE!
Meanwhile the stairwell has never been cleaned.
OIG finding: Building 5’s Emergency Exit Stairwells Were Not Cleaned Due to a Misunderstanding Regarding the Lease Scope.
So sad.
Same thing happened at a San Francisco hospital a few years ago when a British tourist admitted with delirium wandered into a stairwell and died. They didn’t find her body for two weeks I think.
How terrible!
How terrible!
It is.
Anyone ever smell a dead body. It’s a very distinct smell that you do not forget. And it would be overwhelming in an environment like that.
