What rocked Afghanistan agriculture is the Soviets destruction of the ancient underground Karez irrigation systems that brought water from the mountains. Afghanistan is extremely dry. 1st year I was there it didn’t rain from late March to October.

Read they now farmed something like 20-30% of the land under agriculture in the 70s.
