Simone Biles has withdrawn from her third individual apparatus final of the Olympics, leaving only one event where she can choose to compete.

Biles on Sunday withdrew from the floor exercise final, which was scheduled for Monday, U.S.A. Gymnastics said in a statement. She had previously said that she would not compete in the uneven bars or vault finals, which are scheduled for Sunday night.

Her last potential event in the Tokyo Games would be the balance beam, and U.S.A. Gymnastics said she would make a decision soon.

“Either way, we’re all behind you, Simone,” the organization said in a statement.

MyKayla Skinner, another American, will take Biles’s place in the vault final. On the floor exercise, Jennifer Gadirova of Britain will move into Biles’s spot.

Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, was expected to repeat as all-around champion, but she withdrew from the all-around and the team final last week, citing mental health issues. She said that she was not mentally prepared to compete and that she was also dealing with a common gymnastics problem of her losing bearings while performing daring maneuvers in the air.

She exited the team final after the vault, and was in the stands to watch her teammate Sunisa Lee win the all-around. Lee was the fifth straight American woman to win that event, following Carly Patterson in 2004, Nastia Liukin in 2008, Gabby Douglas in 2012 and Biles in 2016.

Lee’s next chance at a medal will be on Sunday in the uneven bars, her best event.

A new all-around champion. Sunisa Lee won the gold medal in the women’s all-around competition, taking advantage of Simone Biles’ exit from the competition. Lee has few equals on uneven bars, and may also medal in the event finals.

Enough already. Why don’t the media leave the poor woman alone?

Biles looked left, looked right, and realized the competition was much better than herself

Her coaches pushed her to the breaking point and she broke. Don’t enroll your daughter in gymnastics with these freaks.

I think it’s more that the fame got to her. It can do a number on your head, creating unrealistic expectations that you cannot possibly reach.

I don’t think someone would train their entire lives to get to the Olympic to back out once they are there so she must have a good reason for doing it. Hopefully everything turns out alright for her. That being said, I don’t care for the media trying to make her look like a hero for backing away from olympics. It’s unfortunate that it happened , doesn’t make her a hero though .

The strength and courage of this young black woman in the face of such sexualized systemically racist exploitations is an example for all young black women to follow.

Oh who cares. She is obviously not ready for prime time - may never be with the crap society we have now. Technical athletic ability is such a small part of competition at that level, the rest is mental.

Her coaches were profiting off her, pushing her to do tricks no one has ever done. They broke her.

Yogi Berra said it best.” 90% of hitting is half mental” No matter how physically gifted an athlete may be, if they are not mentally balanced, focused and at peace, they cannot and do not perform well. Teams employ internal medicine and orthopedic physicians, physical therapists, trainers, fitness instructors and all sorts of specialty coaches. Always wondered why they don’t openly employ psychiatrists and psychologists on their staffs. Many a professional athlete need them and might benefit.

I wonder how the person that missed out on being on the Olympic team by 1 slot feels?

She took someone else’s spot on the team.

She said that she was not mentally prepared to compete and that she was also dealing with a common gymnastics problem of her losing bearings while performing daring maneuvers in the air.

Not an insignificant issue.

She could be seriously, permanently injured if she lost her bearings and did not land right.

It’s called “marijuana use.” Virtually everyone of these “mental health” issues are euphemisms for “I smoke weed.” Like the tennis player who took a furlough because of “anxiety and depression.” Young blacks are smoking weed at alarming rates, and the modern weed is much stronger and has more negative effects on the brain than what was used a generation ago. Another example: Michael Phelps, who is featured in ads talking about his “depression.” He was also a weed smoker.

Nonsense

People like you and all the press were hounding her day and night

The great American public has no clue the toll it takes. These athletes for the most part are very young. The expectations of millions are put on the shoulders of those not mature enough to handle it

Well said. Very politically correct to omit this critical fact in these stories.
