Pentagon to house endangered Afghan interpreters at Fort Lee in Virginia; Administration plans to take some applicants to safety in other countries

The Biden administration is planning to temporarily house about 2,500 Afghans fleeing unrest in their home country at Fort Lee, Va., with expansion to other military bases possible in the future, U.S. officials said Monday.

The Army post, about 25 miles south of Richmond, will serve as a way-station for Afghans who have passed the State Department’s screening for special immigrant visas, said John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman. The group includes interpreters who worked alongside U.S. troops in Afghanistan and their family members.

“These people and their families are in the very final stages of the SIV process, so there’s just not a need for them to be on a military installation for long before they’ll work through the resettlement process, so just a few days,” Kirby said.

He said Fort Lee is “just an initial location” that could be used for Afghans who will be resettled, but he declined to name others.

Ned Price, a State Department spokesman, said that the administration has activated a task force that includes experts from several government agencies to take qualified applicants out of harm’s way and to United States “once security vetting is complete.”

About 4,000 other applicants have received a lower level of approval for visas from the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Price said. The administration plans to take those individuals to safety in other countries, where they will be provided with accommodations that “can last a number of months.”

“We are striving to shorten these processing times at every stage,” Price said, adding that the administration is “surging” additional U.S. government employees to get involved in the process.

U.S. officials have said previously that they are reviewing using military installations in the Persian Gulf region to house interpreters who are earlier in the visa-review process. Few details have been released.

These are the brave Afghanis that served with our troops as interpreters often under fire and under constant threat if capture and beheading if caught helping Americans. Their families will also be killed for helping us. They earned their access to the USA by taking up arms with us against the Tban far more than can be said for a lot of keyboard commandos all over the internet. It’s the right thing to do to make good on our promise to them for safety in exchange for working and fighting with us.

The problem is not that these people need our help, but that why after 20 years, that there are any Taliban left?

An Afghan man suspected of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl in Austria has been arrested in the UK and faces extradition.

Rasuili Zubaidullah, 22, entered the UK on a boat of refugees and claimed asylum using a fake name, only weeks after the girl was found dead in Vienna.

He was housed at a hotel in Whitechapel, east London, for two weeks until Austrian police tipped off authorities in the UK.

Officers from the National Extradition Unit arrested him on 29 July, and he now faces extradition from the UK.

Zubaidullah is accused of raping and killing a 13-year-old girl, whose body was found rolled up in a carpet in Vienna on 26 June.

The girl, who is known only by her first name Leonie, was drugged, gang-raped, and then suffocated.

Austrian police launched a manhunt for a group of Afghan refugees they believe are responsible, and have arrested three other men.

Zubaidullah is thought to have provided Border Force officials in Kent with a fake name when he arrived in the UK on 18 July.
