A former Corning Inc. scientist has been charged in connection with an alleged scheme to steal technology from a government-funded project he was working on and transfer it to China.
Wang Ji, 59, was indicted late last month by a federal grand jury in Rochester, New York, on charges of economic espionage, theft of trade secrets, and unlawful exports.
According to the recently unsealed indictment, Wang, who worked for the company from 1998 to 2019, was assigned as the lead scientist to work on a project initiated and partly funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). DARPA injected $16 million into the endeavor.
The aim of the project was to develop high-powered optical laser fibers that could be used to defeat hostile drones. Wang and his team were successful, boosting the power of fiber lasers by 1,000 times, according to the court document.
The information and technology produced by the project were trade secrets belonging to Corning and restricted for export under U.S. law, the government said.
Prosecutors allege that in July 2016, Wang, without permission, downloaded the DARPA project files, including information on the manufacture of the laser fibers, onto his personal drive. According to the indictment, Wang stole the information to use as a reference for a fiber laser business that he was seeking to set up in China, called QuantumWave.
At the time, Wang and an unnamed business partner were negotiating with several Chinese authorities in the northern megacity of Tianjin about establishing a laser fiber research and development company, according to the indictment. They sought $29 million in seed funding for the venture.
The two also expressed interest in starting an optical fiber lab in the city as part of a state-sponsored recruitment program, according to the document.

That’s what you get for hiring spies.
execution
We should not be giving clearances or spots in American universities to people with relatives in China. All of them must be assumed to be spies for China. All of them are subject to and experience blackmail from the CCP. They are not allowed to emigrate without making agreement with CCP intelligence. Their children and grandchildren are subject to the same blackmail with progressively less effect as relationships become more remote, bu the effect does not disappear.
This stops when the Chicom Scientist are not being employed in sensitive positions. I have no doubt some if not many of the USA Corps. playing these days are fine with it if not in with the theft.
“paying these guys”
Get a rope.

Many people were not aware of China’s continuing theft of US intellectual property until Trump put the issue in the forefront.
China has a long history of stealing U.S. technology secrets. This is not a “competition” between powers as President Joe Biden suggests, but a deliberate and serious violation of U.S. intellectual property rights (IPR) by the CCP. This was evident and worsened during the Obama era.
Beijing even incorporated such thefts, including the Thousand Talents Program, into its strategies for China’s economic rise and world dominance.
Trump had responded to these thefts and signed a memorandum accusing the Chinese regime of “unauthorized access to intellectual property, trade secrets, or confidential business information,”.
Subsequently, Trump placed the U.S.-China economic and trade dispute on the negotiating table, with trade deficits and IPR being the focus of Washington in bargaining with Beijing.
At the beginning of the 2018 U.S.-China trade talks, the CCP said it could negotiate with the United States on both trade and IPR, but in fact, it was unwilling to budge on either, and Beijing was coaxing and pestering the Trump administration at the negotiating table.
During the lengthy negotiations, the CCP negated all the accusations entirely. Obviously, the CCP would rather bear high U.S. tariffs than actually end its IPR infringement activities; at the same time, the CCP has been confining the U.S.-China trade negotiations to trade as much as possible, hoping to use trade concessions to divert U.S. attention from the CCP’s theft of technology secrets.
For the CCP, the U.S.-China trade talks could only be a “trade war,” and if the talks went beyond trade and investment issues, they would have touched China’s red line, which was the issue of technological espionage.
For Trump, theft of IPR must be dealt with and violators must be prosecuted. As a result, no progress could be made in the negotiations between the two sides.
If there is no system to protect the safety of innovation results, and any innovation may be arbitrarily plagiarized by other enterprises, then who is willing to invest a lot in R&D and end up with no return on the investment?
What China lacks is a system to ensure the safety of innovations, and it is a common practice of Chinese enterprises to plagiarize for profit.
I am not confident that Joe Biden (or people in his administration) will deal seriously with this issue at all. It is going to be a long 3 1/2 years.
Wang doodle doodle. Capital punishment.
This exchange of our most valuable high tech design and manufacturing information that leaves our country too often via Chinese immigrant spies must be stopped. It never happens in reverse. We need to establish employment policies that recognize China ìs not an ally and in fact is a threat and potential military enemy.
Seriously? we prosecute treason and espionage? Did the guy own a rifle and protest the election on Jan 6 or something? What crime against the deepstate did he really commit?
The Feds and Gov’t Contractors never ever learn. They are so wrapped up and consumed with DIVERSITY they continually Jeopardize Nat’l Security to pay homage to their god Political Correctness.
I was working for L-3 Communications after I retired from the military as a Program Manager. L-3 employed a 1st Generation Chinese-American to work on a Super Silent Electric Drive system for our NextGen subs. The father and the uncle were immigrants from Communist China. They had groomed their sons from childhood to become spies for the Communist Chinese. They excelled in school. Attended MIT and slowly worked their way into highly sensitive projects. They were caught at the boarding gate at LAX with thumb drives with all the details of the highly classified materials for the completed Super Silent electric drive tech.
The FBI did not catch them. The FBI never suspected them. So, how were they busted? The wife discovered the secret and alerted the FBI just in time to prevent them from leaving the country with all that highly classified data.
The feds then investigated the family and discovered the cousin, employed by another defense contractor was involved in a similar spy op. This sort of thing happens repeatedly.
There is a total breakdown of secrecy in our entire military and weapons development system.
Get Trump out and help CCP is one reason that China and Dems may have colluded to create and import the Wuhan virus and rig our election for China Joe. The other was to underhandedly stop without need for excessive CCP authoritarian attacks on Hong Kong freedom protesters.
Is that the drive we got from Red October?😏
He was charged? Is that worse than what Joe and Hunter Biden did with China or Ukraine?
The DNC should steal an election for this guy.
Fair trial.
Then hang him.
L
Maybe all that is a minor issue and pales in comparison to disasters the government might cause.
Blow his filthy spying head clean off his shoulders and mail it to Ji of the CCP. Feed the rest to feral hogs.
How in hell did he get clearance?
