You're not far off at all. I did some research on the Dallas "gay" men's chorus. These groups are very close knit and are overwhelmingly affluent (they cover their own travel and clothing.) And yet, they overwhelmingly are affected by the typical maladies which are endemic in this perverted population. Not a disease of the "poor" by any means.

Their website includes a member's memorial, which isn't comprehensive but contains hundreds of names of former members who have died, many admittedly from AIDS and related cancers. The average ages of the ones listed are in the mid- to late forties.
