Now 'trigger warning' is banned by Brandeis University along with the 'offensive' phrases 'picnic', 'rule of thumb' and 'take a shot at it'

A liberal arts college in Massachusetts has warned its students and faculty against using 'violent language' - even banning the phrase 'trigger warning' for its association with guns.

Brandeis University in Waltham has created an anti-violence resource called the Prevention, Advocacy & Resource Center which provides information and advice to students and staff.

It lists words and idioms, including 'picnic' and 'rule of thumb,' which it claims are 'violent' and suggests dreary alternatives such as 'outdoor eating' for the former and 'general rule' for the latter.

The college claims that 'picnic is often associated with lynchings of black people in the United States, during which white spectators were said to have watched while eating, referring to them as picnics or other terms involving racial slurs against black people.'

Picnic is derived from the French 'pique-nique,' originally used to describe the taking of one's own wine to a meal, which later evolved to encompass the sharing of food outdoors and started being used in England in the 18th century.

Offend the PC and Woke with gusto. Go out of your way to offend them.

When they tell you they’re offended smile warmly and say “You’re welcome!”

>>The college claims that ‘picnic is often associated with lynchings of black people in the United States,

People also ate picnics while watching the Civil War being fought.

People also ate picnics to celebate Juneteenth.

No doubt all racists have drunk water in their lifetimes but it would be foolish to ban water consumption as “racist”.

At this point might be easier to name the few words that can still be spoken there.

If you're white, male, heterosexual, and conservative, none of them. I'm serious - anything you say is inherently racist, oppressive, and whatever other slander happens to be current. Oh, and silence won't help you either. Silence is acquiescence to the white power structure.

The distance from this to genocide is a very short one.

No, not “homeless”; “person experiencing housing insecurity.”

This is an impossible task. It is impossible to know what comment a person might make that could cause an emotional reaction in another.

For example they want us to use the word “rape” instead of “non-consensual sex”, but I know people who cringe when they hear the word rape. It’s nobody’s but the rapists’ fault but it is a trigger word for some. You can’t blame well meaning people who didn’t know and meant no offense. But personally I try to avoid using that word because it recalls a traumatic experience for some people. So IMO I think these ideas are not really helpful at all. They are just words and phrases commonly used and for the most part people who use them don’t mean any harm. What is needed is just a little more empathy and a lot less less authoritarianism and senses of entitlement. All this sort of language manipulation does is create more acrimony and grudges and division.

Rule of thumb: In English, rule of thumb refers to an approximate method for doing something, based on practical experience rather than theory. Such a rule is usually a principle with broad application that is not intended to be strictly accurate or reliable for every situation.

This usage of the phrase can be traced back to the seventeenth century and has been associated with various trades where quantities were measured by comparison to the width or length of a thumb.

Typical ignorant liberal colleges.

When, when, I beg of the WORLD, will the Sun come out to melt this snowflake existential traumatic view of life? Think of the effort put in by Brandeis Administration, Staff and Faculty to create this NewSpeak transposition dictionary! Ah, such quality work they have produced here that I may barf!

On the other hand I can pray that this was produced by a sophomore drinking session and then slipped under the door of the dean of student life as a prank that has gone wrong. On the second thought, I don’t think that there are sophomores anymores!

It has always been a rule of thumb concerning picnics here in Louisiana, not to eat anything while seated on the nice lush grass. Why, you ask? Because, like every pin-headed liberal, your butt will be covered in fire ants, and yes, just like liberals, that would be a tremendous pain on your glutemous maximus.

I find it quite humorous, that in those once vaunted halls of higher learning, where the secrets of the inner and outer universe were once taught, that the student today is not taught anything except a re-wiring of all the information and knowledge accrued prior to writing the check for his freshman year of college!!

Seems to me, that money, and that indebtedness, could have been avoided.

How can you ban so called “Trigger Words” if you cannot say the word trigger?

I think perhaps it would be best if we all avoided eating outside entirely. Just to be on the safe side.

You beat me to it, because I took the time to haul out the OED. Nothing at all about wife-beating in any of the definitions or citations of the phrase “rule of thumb”.

Our colleges and Universities became stupid because the boomer generation hit colleges en masse and caused colleges to hire lots of people who were not smart enough or qualified to be professors... then to make matters worse radical boomers from the 60's moved into teaching slots and we had the dumbing down of higher education.

The demographic solution is for parents to stop sending their kids to education institutions skating on decades old reputations.
