In Break With Trump, Sen. Lindsey Graham Praises Dr. Anthony Fauci
"I have all the respect in the world for Dr. Fauci," Graham, a vocal ally of the president, said during a news conference. "I think any effort to undermine him is not going to be productive, quite frankly."
The senator's comments join a chorus of notable figures who have spoken in defense of Fauci, including Harvard's Public Health Institute director Dr. Ashish Jha, actress Mia Farrow and presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, whose campaign called the administration’s recent attacks on Fauci a "disgusting attempt to pass the buck."
The Washington Post reported Saturday that the White House is blocking press appearances by Fauci, whose sober, science-based take on the surge in Covid-19 cases across the nation puts him in opposition to Trump's overt optimism and desire to move on to reopening the economy, with several media outlets receiving a "lengthy" list from the White House of “wrong” comments made by Fauci that the New York Times characterized as "opposition research."
Admiral Brett Giroir, who oversees the federal coronavirus testing effort, said on Sunday that "Dr. Fauci is not 100% right" and implied he doesn't consider factors like economic impact in his comments, saying, "He looks at it from a very narrow public health point of view."
Last week, after Fauci remarked that the current state of the pandemic is "really not good" with new daily case records, President Trump pushed back, saying, "I think we are in a good place … I disagree with him."
