No; one can immigrate without assimilating - it's ok.

Says you. Look around you...immigration without assimilation is part of our problem. Without assimilation, the immigrant is just a visitor whose allegiance is to his “home” Country. Immigration without assimilation is akin to getting a divorce, remarrying and going around the house you share with your new husband and installing pictures of yourself and the ex.

Maybe our thoughts about assimilation are different.

I’m sure many second-generation folks learned about where their parents came from by pictures on the wall and stories about the grandparents that stayed behind.
