“Housing associations are also called registered providers (RPs) of social housing and are now the main providers of new social housing in the UK. They are non-profit organizations. Any money is put back into the associations to manage and maintain existing homes and to help build new ones.”

“You can only get a housing association property after you have been accepted for housing by the local authority and allowed to bid, or nominated to a housing association. Renting from a housing association is a cheaper option than renting an equivalent standard of accommodation in the private sector. If you’re on a low income you may qualify for housing benefit which will pay your rent in part, or in full.”

“We work closely with housing associations to develop and maintain affordable social housing in Enfield. There are a number of housing associations that have properties for sale, or rent in the borough. You can only buy shared ownership housing association properties if you have been a tenant.”

I remember taking a Greyhound bus into a city in the Western US.

I passed a lot of trailer parks on the way into town.

Could be OK housing for homeless people. Wouldn’t have to do much to the insides but put in bunk beds, a sink and toilet, maybe a 2-burrner stove..

Shipping containers are cheap, strong and very durable. Away from the sea corrosion is minimal. A 20’ TCU sells for under $4K brand new. A “well-used” one is under $1500. That old unit is still capable of being the base of a 20 high stack aboard a ship.

The structure shown is rated stable to a 7.2 earthquake, and up to 125 mph winds.

Would that the 3rd world built structures that strong.

“With an annual turnover in excess of £194m and a workforce of around 1,450 people, Jigsaw Group provides more than 33,000 homes across the North West and East Midlands.”

This site for Greater Manchester will give to an idea of the large role housing associations play in British housing:

Do they have to be citizens?

The rent seems high. I can see why people are living out of vans.

Because of disastrous free trade with the third world we closed our factories in the USA and moved then to save a couple cents on the dollar. So the containers come here with nothing to sell back to China and others.

Hey, Utah!

NYC has a TON of campers that their homeless aren’t using! Make them an offer!

There’s a boat-load of ‘Katrina Cottages’ still available in Louisiana, too!

Some reason States can’t coordinate with one another to share resources that either didn’t work, or they have more of than needed?

Meh. Nobody ever asks me. ;)

That’s because the US buys more foreign goods than foreigners buy from the US.

Not sustainable. Free Traitors™ have ruined the US economy.

I’ve seen start up business office work spaces made up of repurposed shipping container rooms. They can be redone nicely into 10 x 10 or whatever private offices. One place I saw was converted from a gym. They stacked the containers two high and put in stairs/elevator.

“Not sustainable. Free Traitors™ have ruined the US economy.”

As a percent of GDP, trade with other nations is pretty small. It’s about ten percent of GDP, but the largest part of that trade, usually about half, is with Mexico and Canada. It’s surprising how much press that final five percent gets. If it all stopped tomorrow, we’d hardly notice. The deals Trump renegotiated with our largest partners, Japan, South Korea and the UK all tend to protect US suppliers and have also opened their market to products they didn’t use to import. (Chicken products and agricultural products come to mind. The reasons that had to be overcome where that US products were GMO’s. But the real reason was protectionism. Those deals are all ratified and current. We’ll be okay.)

And how structurally safe from earthquakes stacked like that?

Probably as good or better than brick and mortar. Keep in mind
that large structures are made of steel/iron, etc. It depends upon
how good the cross structures tying them together are.

“why use shipping containers?”

I think it’s about economy of scale. There’s such a high existing demand for containers that the manufacturing process has already been streamlined and costs pushed down to the absolute minimum. So if you repurpose them you can take advantage of those cost savings that probably don’t apply to other modular construction materials like prefab concrete.

Also, you probably save a good bit on the construction labor if one guy with a crane can do 75% of the work.
