How can discriminating against a large majority of Americans be good politics?

They calculate that they can combine the votes of bitter, vindictive, paranoid, opportunistic minorities with the votes of spoiled, ignorant, self-hating, guilt-ridden white women.

It's a winning strategy, to be sure.
