So what was the "deal?" What did the prosecutors get in return for this gift to the prison guards?

My guess is that the "deal" is the political optics of having "done something."

How convenient for the higher ups. A sweet plea deal with ‘deferred prosecution’ which means if either guard starts talking out of school... WHAM! Fast prosecution, followed by a conviction and a deep-dark hole.
