Irreducible Complexity: The Challenge to Darwinian Evolutionary Explanations of Many Biochemical Structures

"If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down." -Charles Darwin, Origin of Species

With this statement, Charles Darwin provided a criterion by which his theory of evolution could be falsified. The logic was simple: since evolution is a gradual process in which slight modifications produce advantages for survival, it cannot produce complex structures in a short amount of time. It's a step-by-step process which may gradually build up and modify complex structures, but it cannot produce them suddenly.

Darwin, meet Michael Behe, biochemical researcher and professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Michale Behe claims to have shown exactly what Darwin claimed would destroy the theory of evolution, through a concept he calls "irreducible complexity." In simple terms, this idea applies to any system of interacting parts in which the removal of any one part destroys the function of the entire system. An irreducibly complex system, then, requires each and every component to be in place before it will function.

The 5-part mousetrap illustration is clear, but Behe neglected to mention the 3 fasteners, clip, and axel in the spring. I’ve caught too many mice...

I have parts 1&2 of the DVD series and it’s amazing. Anyone who can believe in evolution after watching those must be either (1)plain stupid, (2)violently against allowing themself to believe in God, (3)in love with the idea they came from a monkey.

Yes, in the DVDs evolution was proved a fantasy. They went through dozens and dozens of “ancient fossils” and proved they were exactly the same as the modern day “version” of the pre-historic mode. Same with plants.

Also, they discussed how mammals were present in some of these rock formations that were “millions” of years prior to when mammals were supposed to have “evolved”. Best part? The museums HAVE THESE FOSSILS, but refuse to show them. Wonder why?? ;>)

Eyes.
It is a hell of step from ‘light sensitive cells’ to an eyeball with color vision and an adjustable, self-focusing lens.
Likewise wings.
Where is the transition from having a membrane between the front and rear limbs or having webbed fingers to having a flight membrane between the elongated fingerbones? How does the species survive while losing the use of its forelimbs before they evolve into wings?

‘An irreducibly complex system, then, requires each and every component to be in place before it will function.’

name an irreducibly complex system that is definitively determined to be so, that is in fact non-debunkable...

I’ll wait...

The bacterial flagellum for one. And at this point they have discovered a single, human cell is so complex it couldn’t have ever evolved. In Darwin’s day they still believed cells were basically a mass of fluid with a core and that was about it.

Here’s another. How about human egg/sperm? Why on earth would anything “evolve” to need a second sex to continue living? The butterfly/moth is another. What “evolution” decides it’s a fantastic idea to go into a cocoon, basically dissolve yourself, and emerge a completely different creature with 100% different digestive system, different body structure, different number of legs....nope. God the Gret Designer was responsible for all of it :)

The problem of irreducible complexity really is a big issue with the whole concept of evolution. Personally, I think evolution makes a lot of sense, but it does have some serious showstoppers that never seem to get talked about by supporters.

Bless you but it really doesn’t make a lick of sense. Unless of course you don’t believe in a Creator. If that is the case we will respectfully disagree.

I don't think it's my place to put constraints on how my creator might do what He wants to do. Seems to me that directed evolution would be an elegant way to create and spread life. I suspect that it is the 'directed' part of that phrase that gets past the irriducibility problems.

Well, again we will respectfully disagree. Why would an all knowing Creator want to do things in such a way when He didn’t need to? Yes, He directed it alright, but by creating things as they were/are now. I’m not going to add to Genesis and give it my own spin.

Darwin came up with an idea when he was what, 19 years old? Now everyone simply runs with it like it was fact? It’s not. It’s a made up idea and that’s really all there is to it.

Have a really good day and I mean it. I’m going to take 1/2 off to enjoy God’s creation in the woods around my house :)
