Hong Kong passed a new immigration law on April 28 that gives authorities the power to prevent people from entering and leaving the city, raising concerns that Chinese mainland style “exit bans” will be implemented in the financial hub. The United States expressed that it is “deeply concerned” about the new law. Meanwhile, a recent study shows that more than half of the local youth that took part in the survey want to leave Hong Kong in the future.
According to the public broadcasting service Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) passed the “Immigration Amendment Bill 2020” in the third reading on April 28. The bill passed easily as most opposition lawmakers had already resigned.
The Hong Kong government stated that the immigration law only applies to inbound flights, and aims to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the city.
The immigration law vaguely states that the Immigration Department has the authority to obtain a passenger’s information before they board a flight to Hong Kong and to ban a passenger from boarding a flight. The new law will be implemented on Aug. 1.
However, legal experts point out that the ban may also be applied to all people boarding flights from the city. The Hong Kong Bar Association stated that the immigration law gives the city’s immigration chief “apparently unfettered power,” as no court order is required and there is no recourse to appeal, The Guardian reported.
A U.S. State Department spokesperson stated on April 29 that the U.S. government is “deeply concerned” by the new Immigration law that could enable “exit bans.”
“We are aware of this legislation and share widespread concerns in Hong Kong about its content, potential uses, and lack of oversight or accountability,” the spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday.

GTH out of there, people of Hong Kong. Come to America...but make sure to blend in with the people streaming through the border.
Unlike President Trump, Slow Joe Biden will NOT have your back.
Very sad. I always wanted to visit Hong Kong. My son taught ESL in China and thought that part of the world was fascinating.
Damn! Once again I committed a classic FReeper crime: did not read the article before posting. :(
Sorry guys!
Hong Kong is my favorite city in the whole world. Really fantastic. This is a terrible tragedy.
What did Britain, Obama and Biden/Harris expect from Red China re Hong Kong, letting a relative economically successful democracy stay in power?
Hong Kong is now a Red Chinese captive state or province. They will never be free again.
I liked the people I met there many years ago. If they can get out, I hope they make it to Taiwan (great people) of the US, Australia (which needs more anti-communists to balance their Marxist influenced government) and even New Zealand which is about to surrender to Red China and become an overseas vassal state (port rights, business rights, political rights and serious espionage/political subversion).
Not sure. With the woke cancer wrecking every American “institution” we’d more likely be importing a bunch more Rat voters.
Heck, that’s no crime.
You’re not a true FReeper until you can say “Proudly posting without ever having read the article!’’.
