If this were Melania Trump, the “press” would have been howling with laughter over her idiotic attempt to speak Spanish (by contrast, Melania speaks five languages fluently) and shrieking about the neo-Nazi imagery behind her. Overall, I took 9 years of high school and college German, along with the Gateway German classes when I was assigned to Germany at the Mannheim Law Center.

I never tried using any of it with the Germans after I said "Guten Tag" to a five-year old German boy on a bus. When he responded, assuming that I could understand and speak the language, he lost me after the first sentence.

Although I must admit that I did get pretty good with the phrase "Eine bier bitte" ...

I don’t even think Spanish is one of the five languages she’s fluent in.

I am consistently terrified of speaking either French or Spanish despite years of schooling in both languages, because native speakers are going to pick apart the linguistics like I would for English. If you don’t have ANY background, you better sit with someone who’s patient and honest and practice, practice, practice, because the world is always watching in some way.

I very much doubt the part in bold. English speakers hear their language mangled every day and simply let it pass, and I doubt that you would launch into an impromptu English lesson or go about mocking someone’s poor pronunciation or grammar.
But I certainly agree that speakers of other languages are not so gracious, least of all the invader classes.

I took French in high school..when i visited France and wanted to find a room for the night..the French woman...who spoke English...told me i had said “ it is raining on the dog”...Ha

I speak a little German, having been there for a job in 2000 and again in 2001. Total immersion works...............
