Parachutes don’t work so well on the moon... or Mars for that matter.

Besides the dead weight of a parachute big enough to softly land the rocket, the rocket also has to be re-designed to withstand massive stresses from a force 180° away from the force of the rocket's thrust.

That thing is huge - parachutes are not a practical option, no more so than they would be as a safety measure for an entire 747. Also, you can’t do a parachute landing on a Moon or Mars mission if you want the ship back.
