Roger Mudd, the longtime political correspondent and anchor for NBC and CBS who once stumped Sen. Edward Kennedy by simply asking why he wanted to be president, has died. He was 93.
CBS News says Mudd died Tuesday of complications of kidney failure at his home in McLean, Virginia.
During more than 30 years on network television, starting with CBS in 1961, Mudd covered Congress, elections and political conventions and was a frequent anchor and contributor to various specials. His career coincided with the flowering of television news, the pre-cable, pre-Internet days when the big three networks and their powerhouse ranks of reporters were the main source of news for millions of Americans.

Who knew this guy was still kickin’...
I thought he was gone around Eric Sevareid’s passing. Silly me.
Roger Mudd - a guy from a time when the MSM at least pretended to be objective. RIP.
“main source of news”
better: “main source of the selected narrative”
Oh, ROGER Mudd. Sorry.
His name was Mudd.
LOL, Harry Mudd from Star Trek.
I wonder if the episode, ,”Mudd’s Women”, could be made today.
Condolences to family and friends of Roger Mudd.
Roger Mudd, Howard K. Smith, Richard C. Hottelet, William Shirer, so many of the 20th Centuries most important journalists are now gone. Notice I did not mention Walter Cronkite. He betrayed us all during the Vietnam war, and remains permanently stained, much like an institutional Jane Fonda. Even their memories will pass away, as the idiots that have taken their place have no knowledge of them, their works, or of the real nature of Journalism. Death is sorta final.
My recollection is that he used to argue that Samuel Mudd was innocent and tried to have the conviction overturned.
I like the first sentence. Ted Kennedy was incoherent in answering the simple question as to why he wanted to run for president. Some think that set his campaign on a downward spiral.
The lesson to all presidential candidates is, be able to explain why the heck you are running, and why you want to be president.
Once he reported a story about Dr. Mudd (maybe about an attempt to have his conviction overturned) and reported Roger Mudd's reaction to the story (with a photo of himself appearing on the screen above himself), all deadpan.
He deserves credit for helping to torpedo Teddy Kennedy's run for President.
His questions to RFK contained phrases filled with violent metaphors, such as “would that shoot down any chance...”, etc. to the point that Bobby eventually interrupted him, saying “Roger!”
It was an eerie exchange given what happened, and even stranger that CBS chose to re-run it a few times.
Roger was a relative...whether direct descendant or cousin I cannot recall...of the Dr. Mudd who treated John Wilkes Booth.
“Name is Mudd” is a reference to this physician who treated an assassin.
Howard K. Smith
Roger Mudd
Good work
Good riddance.
I didn’t... you’d think he’d have some commentary on the collapse of journalism in this country
They gave the Cronkite job to Dan Rather because he was prettier than Mudd. Mudd went to NBC. The rest is history, including the W national guard story and Kenneth. More respect for Mudd.
From my “Things I saw in NYC files”.
Back in the early 70s in a tavern on Columbus Ave about 69th or so on a hot summer afternoon a friend and I walked in and spotted Roger Mudd at the bar. He was well oiled at 5 pm or so. Wearing a nice sports jacket with tie, just out of the studio...it was the Madras Bermuda shorts that caught the eye.
