ANN ARBOR, MI - Facing a big budget shortfall, Ann Arbor officials are looking at where they can trim costs.
More than $1.3 million in reductions in the police department, including elimination of 12 positions, and nearly $730,000 in reductions in the fire department, including elimination of five positions, are among the possible cuts.
Meanwhile, the city’s sustainability office is requesting an extra $3.6 million, creating several new positions, to move forward on the city’s A2Zero carbon-neutrality plan to reduce carbon emissions and fight climate change.
“We’re in a position where the financial needs of the city exceed the resources that we have,” City Administrator Tom Crawford said, explaining costs are rising faster than revenues, and some revenues, like parking fees and tickets, are down notably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The city’s goal is to make the entire community carbon-neutral and powered by 100% renewable energy by 2030, and many millions of dollars are going to be needed.
Faced with a pandemic-induced deficit, the city is looking to all departments to try to trim costs, but the two biggest pieces of the roughly $113 million general fund are police and fire.

Ann Arbor, home of the Wolverines, is pretty peaceful. 1 murder in 2020. That’s 0.8 homicides per 100K residents, vs the US average of 5. This is the one city that might justifiably reduce its police force with few ill-effects.

Don’care as long as I’m not paying to bail them out when that time comes.
Yes, the thing is Ann Arbor is not too far from Detroit. Just one county.
I don’t think Ann Arbor really wants to cut their security budget.
I fear that could drastically impact the security of the town.
I can’t wait to see those electric fire trucks that don’t have any firefighters to operate.

I wonder whose pockets are going to get lined in the name of ‘climate change?’
LOL! That’s what you get when you vote fools into positions of power!
I’m so glad I left Washtenaw County a few years back.
