It’s ranger training and you receive a tab that goes on your uniform. You do NOT have to be assigned to a certain regiment to call yourself a ranger, if fact most of them aren’t.

The United States Army Ranger School is a 62-day small unit tactics and leadership course that develops functional skills directly related to units whose mission is to engage the enemy in close combat and direct fire battles. Ranger training was established in September 1950 at Fort Benning, Georgia.

That jives with my understanding. He went to Ranger school, passed and was authorized to wear the Ranger tab - he’s a Ranger.

To be called a Marine you have to graduate from the Grinder and earn your EGA. I earned that title, very proud of it. When I left the Corps, it was a career move during major personnel cuts. The Marine Corps Reserve was cutting, the Navy Reserves were not. Nobody, especially those who did not serve, has a right to take away what I earned on the Grinder. I will always be a Marine it is part of my DNA and it made me a better Chief. I earned the right to wear an EGA and be called a Marine. Likewise Cotton earned a Ranger Tab, nobody gave it to him. Cotton has a right to call himself Ranger and he should be proud of earning that title. Nobody has a right to take it away from him, especially some slimy civilian whose only military experience is playing war fighting video games.
