The Michigan Senate refused to confirm 13 individuals appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to various state boards and commissions on Wednesday. In a party-line vote, the Senate’s GOP majority defeated the nominations 19-14.
On Jan. 13, Republican state Sen. Jim Stamas stated in a press release that Whitmer’s appointments would be rejected until the administration ended COVID lockdowns and permitted the state to reopen.
“The governor is continuing punitive lockdowns and jeopardizing lives and livelihoods — while state government has largely been unaffected,” said Stamas, R-Midland. “People have suggested that the governor and her department heads not get paid until they allow restaurants and other family businesses to reopen and their workers to earn their paychecks. However, since we are constitutionally restricted from doing that, I am calling on Chairman Nesbitt to reject appointments by the governor until our economy is safely reopened.”
The vote is the most recent in a political struggle between Michigan Republican legislative majorities and the Democratic governor over the extent and duration of ongoing state-ordered lockdowns of business and society. For example, last spring Whitmer vetoed legislation that would have limited how long she may impose executive orders under a law authorizing them during a declared state of emergency.
Outstanding! I wish the Ohio GOP majority legislature would take the same action...but they won’t. Most of them are gutless.
This is how you deal with hardheaded Libs in leadership positions. You have to block their decisions from consideration until other issues are taken care of first.
Maybe they can clean up the voter fraud problem while they’re at it.
She won’t be happy. I wonder how many spells she will cast?
Give credit when credit is due. Kudos to the Michigan senate.
She will just have the secretary of state over rule the legislature and call on the courts to legislate new orders.
If that fails, she will just begin firing elected representatives.
Well they make it up as they go anyway.
Let’s see how half-whitler finds away around this.
“a way”
Dang you spelchuk.
They didn’t do a ballot audit, but they’re actually giving a damn about their constituents AND showing backbone. That’s something.
Wow Trumps influence of actually fighting back is starting to take root a bit in this party it’s ok if the paper writes mean things about you it will be ok
Yes.. this lockdown crap has been going on for a year, while the legislature filed one lawsuit and went on summer vacation
I’m sure it will end once we have a vaccine, oh, wait. They just move the goal posts.
Big deal. Schumer did this to Trump, and the state senate allowed Whitmer to have these lockdowns for a year.
+ 😎
Yes. We’ll see if it’s bluster or if they follow through.
“They didn’t do a ballot audit”
A ballot audit that had the potential to help save the country is more important than confirming dopey appointments by a witch. I hope they burn in hell.
:: Maybe there is a backbone between the lot of them after all. ::
Not convinced.
This does nothing to help us, it only scolds wHitler.
She’s already shown she’s psychotically uncaring.
Since she rules by fiat, not getting her appointees means nothing.
They were crony appointments.
