How did Trump talk them into doing this?
Previously farmers could only sell through gov run markets. Now they will be able to sell privately. The gov run markets, however, did have price guarantees.
I can't claim to be an expert, but from what I see, it'd be more of a free market now. That does mean, however, that the big guys might be able to squash some small guys.
Also note, the yellow flags with the curvy symbol represent Khalistan - a non-existant Sikh nation. There was a revolutionary movement trying to create that some years ago and now some of the hold out advocators of that are attempting to hijack the scene to separate again.
from what I gather, the farmers feed 50% of the population but have shrunk to 10% of the economy. Allowing increased private investment could be viewed as inviting a flood of (chinese-held?) corporate megafarms, that would put them out of the truck farming business, and ultimately, their land. These guys are riding in on horses and 100-yr old tractors - not wealthy by any means and probably with few prospects. Just my read tho
Interesting viewpoint, and the same with some of the other comments.
That’s definitely a good point.
ME TOO! Farmers in Indiana, crashing into buildings?? Wow, just like the old ANtifa + BLM days of last summer!!
thanks, Fruser1 for posting that. I’m completely ignorant of what is going on over there and appreciate background info. The article did mention that “Sikhs from Punjab and Haryana states” tried to march in Nov, and that many are farmers.
Citizens of India have more balls than the present citizens of US. Clearly...
As opposed to a normal day there?
J/k
Everyone hates it when their subsidies are taken away.
Now that’s involved citizens doing something about it!
Similar to the Boston Tea Party...
Insurrection!!!
Stories “that come out of India on occasion.”
yeah, like “Town suffers from Bad Curry”. You know, real news.
By tomorrow this will be added to the Articles of Impeachment.

You have to watch out for those Indiana farmers, especially the Amish and Quaker ones!
Yeah, with Caterpillar back hoe’s and D-9’s.
Hmmm. Laws ‘passed’ by voice vote, without hearings during acrimonious debate. A government which seems to favor certain ethnic/religious factions over others. And so forth and so on. The truth is out there somewhere, but can we trust the BBC to tell it?
And we can be reasonably sure that the Chinese are encouraging the unrest just as much as they can.
India’s bread basket is its part of the Punjab. Endless waves of grain, etc.
Most of the Punjab farmers are Sikhs. Those also tend to have largish farms worked with machinery, the most modern and productive farmers in India.
So of course there is a major Sikh element in this.
Modi’s government is fairly radical Hindu.
Not on good terms with the Sikhs (nor the Muslims).
Looks like civil unrest is an international phenomenon these days.
