I don’t think it’s ever been done but the remedy is removal from office but they will try to argue he should be banned from seeking office again. That’s their goal and that is unacceptable.

That’s covered in the rules of impeachment. If convicted, a vote can be taken to forbid the convicted party from holding any office in the future.
