40 miles is beyond the range of most hand held radios, unless you can hit a repeater. A enhanced CB may do it depending upon terrain.

In the ‘80s, when my BIL headed up the ham organization in his area, I used to type the tests he gave. They scared me - LOL! I think I can rise above it, though; it’s important.
