Betsy DeVos Gave Congress 1 Last Warning Before Resigning from Trump Administration
The Western Journal ^ | JANUARY 16, 2021 | MICHAEL AUSTIN

Before her exit from the Trump administration, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos had one last warning for members of Congress.

In a farewell letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Jan. 4, DeVos warned of the dangers of forgiving student loan debt.

The Democratic Party has made student loan forgiveness one of its top policy priorities.

With control of both houses of Congress and the presidency, the party would have the power to pursue such a policy in the next few years.

“Importantly, I hope you also reject misguided calls to make college ‘free’ and require the two-thirds of Americans who didn’t take on student debt or who responsibly paid off their student loans to pay for the loans of those who have not done the same,” DeVos wrote in her letter, which came two days before the Jan. 6 incursion on Capitol Hill.

DeVos resigned her position on Jan. 7, citing Trump’s role in the incursion. Her position had been due to expire this Wednesday, when Joe Biden will be inaugurated as president.

“Across-the-board forgiveness of college debts is not only unfair to most Americans, it is also the most regressive of policy proposals – rewarding the wealthiest sector of our labor force at the expense of the poorest,” DeVos continued in the Jan. 4 letter. “My recent remarks at the annual FSA conference provide more on that.”

During her speech at the conference, on Dec. 1, DeVos was even more explicit with her denunciation of the left’s move to cancel student debt.

“We’ve heard shrill calls to cancel, to forgive, to make it all free. Any innocuous label out there can’t obfuscate what it really is: wrong,” she said, according to reports. “The campaign for free college is a matter of total government control. Make no...

Too late, Betsy.

College loans were never intended to benefit the students, in any case. They were aimed at subsidizing colleges and universities that should have gone out of business years ago.

Progressives never address the large percentage of college students who drop out - still huge debts, with nothing to show for it (not even a useless degree, which at least that shows the student can complete a multi-year project to the satisfaction of many).
Of course those debts will be paid too; Leftists just refuse to discuss it.

Why should we all honor contracts which were not filled out in good faith and which were subsequently broken? For that is what a college loan is, a contract. By forgiving college loans, we are teaching people to discard and walk away from responsibilities-—and from what I’ve seen, the younger generation does not need any further “instruction” in doing just that. Furthermore, any business considering financing a company looking for a loan would naturally request a business plan to look over. We, who subsidize college loans, do not get any such opportunity. So if the loan recipient chooses to major in a largely unemployable field, such as gender studies, social justice studies, etc., and subsequently cannot obtain meaningful employment in said field, is that our fault? By subsidizing student loans, we’re buying a pig in a poke in the first place, and to then have the responsible party being able to simply walk away from their obligation, leaving the tab for us to pay, is simply ludicrous. Just another way for the Dimmicommies to bring us down in bankruptcy, and they’re doing their best to do just that.

Tuition’s at colleges have increased at something like 3X the inflation rate for several decades. From a value for dollars paid perspective, probably 50% of students go negative on said value. Like spending 50K to remodel your kitchen before putting the house up for sale when you will only increase the selling price by 10K.

Betsy had a hard, more or less thankless job.
The teacher-unions made it fashionable to express hatred and contempt for anything DeVos had to say or imply.
Betsy is a Birthday Girl, her DOB: January 8, 1958.
63 y/o.

This is going to be one of those 'talking points' that gets huffed like whippets by the MSM but will never come to fruition, simply because it doesn't poll well.

50% Say Mass Student Loan Forgiveness Unfair to Former Borrowers: Survey

They'll bury this soon, as wait-and-see how the mid-terms play out.

You all need to understand that Xiden is committed to this amnesty play first front and center, and it's remarkable how dumb and tone-deaf the Donks are to spend Xiden's 'honeymoon' political capital on trying to trap GOP Senators.

There's a paucity of political thinking here that smart conservatives will exploit in 2022.

I believe this is all a moot point. When the Demoncrats have full power the value of our currency will drop down to Venezuela standards. Get ready to lose all of your treasure...

I paid for my son’s Associate’s degree. He knew his Bachelor’s and law school were on him.

He found a great school for his BA, got an academic scholarship, but still needed funding for food, housing, and tuition.

We were going to have to co-sign on a loan for $34K for the next 2 years.

It broke my heart to tell him we could not. He switched to a local campus so our share after the scholarship is just $1,500 a semester.

Sorry, I don’t have compassion for people who major in underwater basket weaving or lesbian dance theory. I don’t want to be on the hook for someone else’s kids. I have 3 of my own.

I knew this thread would immediately be filled with people (some of whom I suspect are Dem divisiveness-trolls) hating on Betsy DeVos and completely ignoring what she said. Which was fully in line with Trump’s policies, btw, and Trump has been a great supporter of hers in her fight for charter schools.

For Pete’s sake, the reason we lose all the time is that we are too busy attacking each other to even notice what the Dems are doing.

We have 7 children, four so far graduating without any loan debt due to our help and their wise choices on affordable schooling and their own work during college. Our so is graduating in Construction Mangement with a great career ahead, looking at very good income potential. He is totally po’ed at what is happening, considering the sacrices he and we made while others took loans for worthless degree. Conservative for life now.

” no one listens to you”....how many people know the student debt figure? 1.8 trillion dollars and growing. Biden’s latest plan backtracks a bit, his latest scam is loans are to be repaid at no more than 5 percent of earnings, and at 20 years the unpaid balance is stricken. The damage to the banking industry is timed destruction, designed to destroy the current bankrupt “ old” banking institution. When, not if, Fedcoin is instated, it will further weaken the current banking industry, making the majority of their “ services” un-needed paving the way for the much talked about “ Great Reset” already underway. No idea how it plays out( sinister) but with the Great Reset starting, AND Congress’s push for Fedcoin ( sovereign cashless digital currency), do beware our traditional banking and financial system is going to be shaken to the core.

That evil, diabolical President Trump who specifically told the Capitol Hill protesters to protest "peacefully."

"Peacefully?" How dare he! IMPEACH! 25th AMENDMENT! JAIL!

That Marxist Democrat Betsy DeVos! ... oh wait, my bad, I just checked ... DeVos describes herself as a conservative Republican ... coulda fooled me, cause she sounds like a Marxist Democrat.

The entire Democrat Party Cabal (that includes Democrat/RINO politicians, fake-news MSM, Big Tech/social media censorship companies, most major corporations, all pro sports leagues, academia, Deep State, Hollyweird, etc., etc.) has lost its collective Marxist Democrat mind. Marxist Democrats supposedly "won" -- or so they say -- the Presidency, Senate, and House. So you'd assume the Marxist Democrats would be giddy, ecstatic. Instead, they're now maniacally enraged and vindictive ... Poor "Winners." Can't you smile even once, Chuckie & Nancy? They now look like they're ready to rip someone's head off. Insane Psycho-Democrats. Have totally lost their political minds. And Sleepy Joe & Laughing Kamala are just puppet figureheads for the Democrat Party Cabal.

What I NEVER hear mentioned in these discussions are the ones who either didn’t take loans or already paid them off. I had an employee a few years back that worked FT for me and PT somewhere else. She worked 7 days a week, every week, trying to pay off her 280k debt. If she’s paid half or more of it off she should be really pissed if others get all of theirs forgiven.

I think Betsy did a good job. Her hands were in handcuffs but she was a great advocate. It’s a mistake to pay off the students’ loans because we are basically having the working class in the Heartland of America subsidizing the education of the liberal elite who lives on both coasts.

The only thing I think makes sense is to allow School debt to be treated as any other kind of debt with regards to bankruptcy.
