Landing at Palm Beach International Airport, I was ready to see how the other half lived. The COVID-sane half, that is.
Our family hadn’t left New York since March. We had read about how Florida was able to maintain a case rate similar to or lower than New York’s while shunning our crippling lockdowns. Still, we were apprehensive. “Be careful down there, no one wears a mask,” was typical of advice I got from well-meaning friends.
And indeed, Florida has a reputation as one of the looser states. In mid-April, after a short lockdown, Gov. Ron DeSantis gave the green light for beaches to open. “Wait two weeks!” the naysayers urged back then. But two weeks came and went, and Florida’s numbers remained relatively steady after a peak in mid-July.
Stepping off the plane, we noticed something odd: Everyone was, in fact, masked. And keeping their distance. There was hand sanitizer everywhere. The COVID “Mad Max” world was nowhere to be found. Yes, everything was open, but precautions-wise, southern Florida looked a lot like New York.

DeSantis 2024!
NO! You can’t have him! He’s got another term as governor here in FL. You can have him in 2030.
People are still forced to run around in face diapers in situations deemed risky by the state?!
Note to DeSantis: No thanks. I don’t need you deciding that for me.
We don’t have that much time y’all are just going to have to take one for the team. And look at his re-election run as his audition for the Presidential campaign.
Good luck finding someone better in that department.
We winter in Florida but live in Michigan. Just returned from up north and it was like going to a third-world country. Since we live in a rural area, restaurants are important to us and not a one had dine-in service. In fact, some of the restaurants we usually order from were shuttered and I doubt they will re-open.
Couldn’t wait to get back south and I am having second thoughts about ever going back.
Thanks Whitmer, looks like you may be one and done.
DeSantis is selling a state that in its infinite idiocy just jacked its minimum wage. That has no cruise industry. That likely desperately needs tourism back to pre WuFlu levels.
Why in God’s name would I want to go down there, spend my hard earned money, earn a quarantine when I got back up here, and STILL have to wear a face diaper for my trouble??
No thanks. I can stay home, be oppressed, and save a ****load of money while I’m doing it.
The dems would never let that happen.
They will have the fraud machine all geared up and running smoothly.
No way a non-dem is ever going to win an election again, except for few tokens.
If we even have elections again. Leave it to the dems to fabricate some other emergency to cancel the elections over.
Desantis had no input into the minimum wage deal. Unfortuntely, FL has a system where a constitutional amendment can pass with 60% of the vote. The minimum wage bill passed with that margin. Desantis had nothing to do with that.
No we aren’t forced to wear masks. Although some choose to.
The article above states otherwise.
Point me to where DeSantis used his bully pulpit to campaign against hiking the minimum wage. Cuz I missed that.
I live in SC. Everyday I see more and more NY license plates. Cuomo’s insanity is emptying the state.
The huge debts being racked up for COVID relief will inevitably lead to an inflationary spiral. When that inflation hits, the recent minimum-wage boosts will be wiped out in short order.
We have a winter home in Fort Lauderdale and had planned on heading down there yesterday. My husband had a complication from knee surgery so it’s going to have to be the end of the month. We can’t wait to feel almost normal and see the sun.
The problem with New Yorkers flocking to SC, and I admit there are a bunch of them, is that typically lean left or hard left. That mindset doesn’t fit here in SC.
They’ve been trying to do the minimum wage since before I left in 2014. Not surprised they finally succeded.
I hope they aren’t staying!
Speaking for most Floridians, we are happy for you to stay. You completely dont understand what is happening in Florida. DeSantis issues an executive order making mask mandates unenforceable in the state of Florida.
Its not him.
