A severe winter storm, the worst to hit Spain in decades, has overwhelmed its capital, Madrid, where around a foot of snow has fallen since Friday.
The blockbuster storm has wreaked havoc across a region not used to seeing any snow, let alone up to a foot or more. A significant amount of snow had not fallen in Madrid in a decade.
As the snow started to pile up Friday night, transportation became impossible, with airports shut down, train services canceled and over 1,000 motorists trapped in their cars on major roadways around Madrid, according to the Associated Press.

Headline 2000: “Snowfalls are now just a thing of the past”
by Marlo Lewis on December 27, 2010
On March 20, 2000, The Independent, a British newspaper, reported that “Snowfalls are just a thing of the past.” Global warming was simply making the UK too warm for heavy snowfalls. The column quotes Dr. David Viner of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia...as saying that within a few years snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event.” Indeed, Viner opined, “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is.”
Similarly, David Parker, at the UK’s Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, said that eventually British children could have only “virtual” experience of snow via movies and the Internet.

When it is 1/2 degree warmer than average... anywhere it is proof of “global warming”.
Madrid is as far South as Savanah, GA and Jacksonville FL.
I was in Madrid once when it snowed. Less than an inch but it did stick. It was pretty interesting watching people react to that. It would be fun to be there right now.
No...Covid-19.
1970 REDUX!!
It will slow down covid.
Don’t worry the big tech Wiz’s have a plan to eliminate Global warming.
Right, because everyone knows massive snowstorms are always associated with the hottest weather!
Naturally!
I live in Spain but about 300 miles South of Madrid on the coast. We have had light rain and it’s cold but cold is a relative thing. We are supposed to hit a low of 7 degrees C tonight. That’s about 44 degrees but to the locals it may as well be the dawn of a new Ice Age.
A friend in Madrid has been sending me photos and even videos of this snowfall. It’s so rare that they consider it very exciting...and it will probably melt fairly soon. No shoveling.
I know people who leave their bedroom window open at that temp. Of course I am in Wisconsin.
I printed the scientific article stating the hymalayas would melt by 2020.
Global warming.
A foot is alot for Spain I guess, but it’s still not a disaster.
